How I Started My Jam Business?

Balancing motherhood and business with homemade delights

As discussed in the previous stories, when my daughter Eleanor was born, I was jobless, with all my savings from my last job gone. Those days were tough, filled with countless challenges. Not only was I struggling financially, but I was also battling postpartum depression.

It was a time when everything seemed overwhelming, and the future looked uncertain. Despite the hardships, Eleanor’s presence gave me a new purpose. I knew I had to find a way to support us, but with a newborn to care for.

A Mother’s Resolve

In those early days with Eleanor, I knew getting a regular job wasn’t an option. Eleanor was too small, and there was no one else to look after her. I found myself in a tough spot, needing to make money but unable to leave my daughter. This situation made me think hard about what I could do from the comfort of my home. I wanted to be there for Eleanor’s every smile and every cry, yet I also had to ensure our financial security.

That’s when I remembered how much people loved the jams I made. It was a hobby I did for fun, but maybe it could be more. The idea excited me. I could make jam while Eleanor napped or played. It was perfect. It allowed me to be a full-time mom and start a small business. This way, I could stay close to Eleanor and contribute to our livelihood.

From Kitchen to Marketplace

So, I rolled up my sleeves and started my jam business right from our kitchen. I picked the best fruits, experimented with recipes, and stirred pots while Eleanor watched curiously from her high chair. It was a simple beginning, with just a few jars of jam. But each jar was filled with hope and determination. I was turning my small kitchen into a tiny factory, balancing between being a chef and a mom. It was hard work, but every time I sealed a jam jar, I felt closer to my dream.

Next, I needed to let people know about my jams. I made small leaflets and pamphlets at home, pouring my heart into every word. I asked my friend to help distribute them around our neighborhood. I remember feeling nervous and excited at the same time. Would people like my jam? Would they support a small business like mine? These questions buzzed in my mind as I waited for my first customer. Little did I know my small step was about to turn into a giant leap?

Spreading Like Wildfire

The response from the community was more than I ever hoped for — word about my homemade jam spread quickly, much like wildfire. Neighbors started knocking on my door, eager to try the jams I had made.

Each compliment on the taste and quality of my jam felt like a pat on the back, encouraging me to keep going. As the demand for my jam grew, so did my confidence. My kitchen was buzzing with activity, and the sweet aroma of cooking fruit became a staple in our home.

After two fulfilling years of making and selling jam, my journey took a new turn. As Eleanor grew older and started attending daycare, I started a job at a nearby hotel. But I haven’t forgotten the sweet beginnings of my jam business.

I still make jam, especially for those special clients who supported me during tough times. They were more than just customers; they were my cheerleaders when I needed them most.
