How I Started Making $100 a Month Writing on Medium (And How You Can Start Too)
The steps needed to generate a stream of passive income.
I have been writing for Medium on and off for almost two years now. Some of my articles are quite popular, with over 100k views—while most of the other ones flopped. I really only have a handful of published articles, but the ones that succeeded have started to make me a small, but noticeable stream of passive income.
A lot of writers talk about how they are making $2000-$4000 a month in passive income from writing, but they are well into their writing journey. I really just started my writing career, so I am nowhere near this — not yet, anyway. At this time of writing, Medium is paying me about $100 a month, and the majority of that monthly income is generated by only two or three articles — the rest make me pennies.
These numbers don’t look that impressive, I know. But it is a start, and it is growing. It’s also a lot more than I expected to make when I first started writing. It starts with one article at a time, but as you write more and more, your passive income stream begins to grow quickly. I am confident that I will reach my goal of doubling my monthly income stream in the next month. Here are the steps I am taking to make this happen, and if you are interested in generating more passive income, I hope you follow along:
1. Write more articles
This one is pretty obvious. The more articles you have published, the more likely you are to have a few that take off and start generating some income. I am aiming to publish at least two new articles per week. If you can consistently write a couple of articles a week, that’s over one hundred by the end of the year, and at least a few of them should gain decent popularity.
2. Write on popular topics
When it comes to Medium, some topics are more popular than others. If you can write on topics that are in demand, you are more likely to get readers and, as a result, make some money. My homepage has dozens of tech articles, crypto news, and life advice with thousands of claps, so I know there is a demand for these topics. You just have to find something you enjoy writing about, do your research, and start writing.
3. Promote your articles
Just because you publish an article on Medium doesn’t mean people will automatically find it and read it. You need to promote your articles if you want them to be successful. There are a number of ways to promote your articles on Medium. I am experimenting with a few different methods, but the ones that have worked best for me so far are:
- Sharing articles on social media.
- Reaching out to popular bloggers in that niche and asking them to share your article.
- Finding popular articles on Medium and leaving thoughtful comments (this can help get your article in front of new readers).
4. Be patient
It takes time to build an audience on Medium (or anywhere else, for that matter). Don’t expect to publish a few articles and start making thousands of dollars overnight — it takes time, effort, and patience to be successful as a writer on Medium. However, I know it is possible to make a full-time income from writing on Medium as long as you are willing to put in the work. If you are looking to grow your audience and earn some money on the side, just follow the same steps as me and you will succeed.
Final Thoughts
If you want to make more money from writing on Medium, you need to write more articles, write on popular topics, and promote your articles. Be patient and don’t expect overnight success. If you are consistent, you will start to see that your articles earn you a little bit more each day. I hope that this advice is useful and that you start to see success in your Medium writing career!
