How I Saved $348 in Cat Food

Small savings can become huge savings…that is a fact!

How I did it?

The easy and quick answer comes from budgeting and knowing exactly where I am spending my money every month. The process starts there and if there is room for saving a little bit more we should always aim for it.

I currently have 2 cats and the most recent addition to the family has been with us for over a year. I did not pay too much attention to how much I was spending on cat food when I had one cat only. That is the truth!

When I got my second cat and noticing how much food he was eating I decided to take a closer look at my cat spending! So on average with one female cat, I was spending 20$ a month in all types of cat food (wet, dry and snacks). I admit this is not considered a big expense to me but still we are talking of $240 a year.

Adding a male cat with double the weight would certainly increase the spending in at least 100%. That would be $480 a year!

This got me thinking and I wanted to see if I could eventually do some savings here!

Truth is I was buying every time the same brands and same flavors on a need basis not really paying attention to the price. I was also buying the smallest quantities and individual pouches.

Those were my mistakes!

First, cat food has long expiry dates so we are able to easily stock it! Second, buying big quantities of all types of food can bring the total spend down more than 50%. I was amazed to see that the price per Kilo went down to half when buying a 6Kilo bag instead of a 1.5Kilo in the same exact product!

So with 2 cats, for the first 3 months, I averaged $56 a month. This was $672 a year. By stocking up food and buying the same exact product in larger quantities, I managed to bring the monthly cost to $29. So $672-(12*$29) = $348.

I could not believe it! Simple tricks saved me $348 a year!

You can now imagine if I would swap the cat food for a cheaper brand. However, I decided not to do it simply because my cats are used to it and the product line was actually recommended by the vet.

Even so, I would not expect such an improvement. We tend to overlook the small expenses when having way bigger expenses but sometimes is much easier to save on the little things.
