How I Raised $10,000 For People in Ghana Impacted by Covid-19 and How I Continue to Raise Money and Change Lives

I moved to Ghana from the UK in 2016 to live the “Laptop Lifestyle.” I wanted to top up on vitamin D daily and work from the beachfront every day. It didn’t quite work out like that but I am living a good life out here in Ghana. I set up an initiative to provide writing opportunities to young women out here and so far, I have over 65 young women on my books, the numbers continue to rise.
Fast forward to 2020 when Covid-19 hit, my client base dropped and my writers lost a large portion of their income. I met several young business owners who suddenly no longer had an income. For example, beauty salons, restaurants and daycare centres suddenly were forced to close their doors. I heard stories on social media of people struggling to feed themselves, it was terrifying. I felt compelled to do something to help.
Here is how I raised $10,000 for people in Ghana impacted by the Coronavirus, and how I continue to raise money and change lives out here in Ghana.
Social Media Appeal
I appealed to my followers on social media, namely Instagram and Facebook. I wrote a very simple and compelling message and sent it to my followers one by one. Hoping and praying that would help.
A Little Twist
I added a little twist and offered a lucky person $2,000. The twist was that if you donate, you could be in with a chance to win $2,000. I am aware that lots of people around the world are struggling financially and need help too. Therefore, I created a crowdfunding system which allowed people to pay something and also be in with a chance of winning some money. The $2,000 twist worked like a charm and people started sending their donations thick and fast. So far, I have given out $3,000 in prizes and given out $10,000 to people in Ghana who are desperately in need.
What am I doing Now?
I am using the same method however, I have kicked things up a notch and I am creating video content too. Last week, I created a short YouTube video explaining how people in Ghana are struggling as a result of the Coronavirus. Yes,there are some government directives in place to support the people such as cheaper electricity bills and free water however, it is simply not enough. I feel like it is my duty to continue helping the beautiful people of Ghana.
To donate (if you like)
Note: You can also win $2,000 if you donate between $1 and $5.00
Yeh, thank you! Let’s spread the love and help out !
Peace and blessings to all of you, it’s all love.
