How I Prioritize Sleep To Extend My Life
Taking sleep for granted can be a big mistake that can affect our lives forever.
Sleep, a basic necessity of life, is often taken for granted. Maybe delaying it to watch that one extra tiktok or maybe staying up and working on a project you procrastinated on until the very end.
As someone who has struggled with bad sleep quality, I understand the impact it can have on our physical and mental well-being. The importance of sleep runs deeper than you think, sleep is so vital it can affect your life in a negative way maybe even shorten it if you do not take the correct steps to get a good night’s rest.
The Vicious Cycle of Insomnia
Sleepless nights plagued me for months, and I soon found myself caught in the vicious cycle of insomnia. Every night, I would lie in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. Some nights I would stay awake for hours hoping I would eventually fall asleep, it was not fun.
The lack of sleep left me feeling irritable, exhausted, and unable to concentrate during the day. There were even times I would stay cooped up in bed for hours after I woke up exhausted and unmotivated to start my day.
The Struggles and Frustrations
Physically, I experienced headaches, muscle tension, and fatigue. Mentally, my mind became a whirlwind of racing thoughts, anxiety, and worry. The frustration of not being able to fall asleep despite feeling exhausted was overwhelming.
Seeking Solutions
Determined to improve my sleep quality, I tried various remedies. I began by establishing a consistent sleep routine, going to bed, and waking up at the same time every day. I created a relaxing bedtime ritual, which included reading a book and practicing deep breathing exercises.
You would not believe how efficient your life becomes when you start to journal and plan out your day. Everything becomes more meaningful and my body responds accordingly. Keep a nice and simple routine, trust me if you do not plan to succeed, you are planning to fail.
What To Avoid Before Bedtime
- Do not use technology 10–15 minutes before you sleep, blue light from certain devices can disrupt the production of melatonin, a hormone that facilitates sleep and can throw off your circadian rhythm.
- Stay away from caffeine a couple hours before you sleep, very obvious but some of us forget that caffeinated drinks are not only delicious but keep us awake and alert, which is a no-no for sleeping.
- Eating heavy or spicy food can cause indigestion making it pretty hard to fall asleep.
Exploring Natural Remedies
I experimented with essential oils like lavender and bergamot, which can promote relaxation and induce sleep.
While not a one-size-fits-all solution, these natural remedies provided me with some relief and helped me unwind before bedtime.
The Benefits Of A Good Nights Rest
- Decrease in illness, lower risk of health problems like diabetes and heart diseases.
- Reduced stress and improved mood.
- Mind clarity, more alert and motivated.
- A longer and healthier life.
The Road to Recovery
Over time, with a combination of self-care practices, natural remedies, and a lottt of research, my sleep quality gradually improved. I learned to prioritize sleep, making it a non-negotiable part of my daily routine. It took some time, but eventually, I found my desired routine that works for me.
(If you are interested, this is a quick summary of what I do for my daily night routine).
- No food or caffeine 3 hours before sleep.
- Skin routine, brush my teeth.
- Quick 5 minute meditation for relaxation and destress.
- No technology 15 minutes before sleeping, read 1–2 page(s) from mostly fictional books (These books are less stimulating for my mind).
- Sometimes, I would listen to rain videos as background to help me sleep better (This is a preference).
Conclusion
Sleep is very important, your health comes first, and prioritizing it is crucial to living and longer and happier life, having a fixed time from sleeping to waking up. Planning ahead helps a ton and implementing small routines like meditation, journaling, and reduced blue light go a long way.
