How I Met My True Love: Celebrating 7 Years Together

On Monday, January 8, it will be our anniversary. We have been together for seven years, so I decided to share with you how I met the love of my life.

It’s an interesting story because I learned that things never happen the way we want them to.

Let me start with a bit of history. I got married in Slovakia when I was 19 years old.

Unfortunately, our marriage was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made in my life.

We were together for 17 years, but we got divorced eventually. After the divorce, I moved to the US, and two years later, my kids joined me there.

When I first came to the US, I didn’t know English. I started dating a guy from Panama, and we were together for a year.

Being with him helped me learn English quickly. After we broke up, I decided to stay single for a while.

I lived with my adult children for a couple of years while I was single.

I used to believe that if I spent a lot of time by myself, enjoying my life and feeling happy without any particular reason, I would eventually attract the right person into my life.

My mom and my friends didn’t like that I was alone and would bother me about it.

But I enjoyed being single and traveling alone and learned much about myself. Sometimes, it surprised me how much I didn’t know about myself.

I enjoyed taking photos of sunsets because they made me feel very happy like I had won the lottery. I took many pictures of them, and seeing a sunset was enough to make my day.

It was just pure happiness to me. I also enjoyed sometimes having five-hour-long deep talks with my kids.

We were so close, especially because we didn’t have family in the US. It was just us.

In March 2016, I started wanting to share my happy moments with someone. Finally, I thought it was time to meet someone special.

In 2013, I relocated to Chicago from Ohio without any contacts in Illinois.

My routine was simple: work, return home, and spend quality time with my children.

I didn’t have many opportunities to meet new people, as I wasn’t living a very social life.

I joined a dating app called “Match” to find my true love.

It was my first time on a dating app. I created a profile with information about myself and waited.

I received a lot of messages from guys with different backgrounds and personalities.

While I had a few enjoyable conversations, most wasted my time. Around 85% of the messages I received were from pretty crazy guys.

Many times, I was asking myself what I was doing there.

You may have experienced this feeling, but even though you know the dating app is not a good idea, you still use it.

I was on the app for about nine months.

I took my time to chat with guys before meeting them in person. I had a few dates, but I was careful and wanted to get to know them better before deciding to meet.

However, once we met, I realized they were not the right match for me.

I was very particular when it came to finding the right man. Sometimes, I doubted whether I would ever find someone as special as I wanted.

I had high standards and was very demanding about the qualities a guy must possess.

When I was younger, I wasn’t very careful about who I married. I didn’t understand my value, so I ended up marrying someone who didn’t appreciate me.

But then, I was looking for someone special and knew my worth. I believed that there is a man out there who will truly appreciate me.

On December 26, 2016, I deactivated my Match account because I was tired of going on dates with guys who didn’t meet my expectations.

I thought I was going to be single forever. The next day, I was surprised to receive an email through Match from a guy who was asking me about a village in Slovakia where his great-grandparents were from.

He had also asked me some other things, but I don’t remember what exactly it was.

Since I had deactivated my account, I wondered how it was possible for him to contact me.

I wanted to check my message history on Match, and I reactivated back my Match account and found out that the man had also messaged me a month ago, but I hadn’t replied to him.

So that is why, when he sent me a message to Match, I received an email even though I was deactivated.

I wasn’t happy to hear from him or anyone else, as I just wanted to relax from all the messages I was receiving on the app.

I responded and informed him that I had deactivated my account on Match on December 26 and told him I didn’t know anything about the village he was asking about.

I wanted to ensure he understood that I wasn’t very interested in talking to anyone at this time.

After responding to him on the email, I deactivated my Match account again.

A few days after the new year, I decided to try Match again. If I didn’t at least make an effort, I wouldn’t find someone.

I reactivated my Match account on January 3, 2017, but I wasn’t fully satisfied with my decision.

A guy emailed me after I deactivated my “Match” account. When I reactivated it, he was the first to contact me again.

I felt it would be rude to ignore him, so I checked his profile. We only had a little in common, and his picture didn’t catch my attention.

However, I felt I owed him some attention since I wasn’t very polite when he sent me the email, even though it wasn’t his fault, as he didn’t know why I received his email when I was deactivated.

We decided to meet up as friends. He was really interested in Slovakia because of his great-grandparents, so I offered to help him.

I was happy to meet him because I was tired of only looking for serious relationships.

I didn’t even feel the need to message him as much as the previous guys. He seemed kind and trustworthy from the start.

On January 8, I met him at Cafe Prague in Chicago. We went on a date, but I wasn’t expecting much out of it.

I felt more relaxed because we talked about meeting as friends, so I had no expectations. Surprisingly, we talked for four hours, which felt like just 15 minutes. I had a great time.

When it was time to leave, I wanted to take an Uber since I lived a few blocks away. However, he offered me a ride home, and I agreed.

He opened the car door for me and let me sit inside first. I felt comfortable around him. For the first time, someone offered to give me a ride, and I actually liked the guy I met.

I was attracted to his charm and energy and felt a connection I couldn’t explain. At first, I didn’t think we would become a couple, but I thought we would remain friends.

However, after our third date, I could sense his growing interest in me, and as we continued to go out, my feelings for him grew quickly.

It’s been seven years since we first met at Cafe Prague. We also had downtime and broke up after being three years together, for which we are very thankful. Our relationship is double as strong as it was before.

Now I can say I met a much more special man than I ever dreamed.

I met a man who is not only good-looking but also humble, intelligent, and kind. He treats everyone equally, no matter their job title. I have never met someone like him before. I admire his humility, thoughtfulness, and positive attitude. He cooks so well that I prefer his food to eating out. He treats everyone the same way, whether they’re a CEO or a cleaning lady. I’ve never met anyone like him in my whole life.

I’m so grateful for the love and respect he shows me daily.

Even though he has always held high positions at work, he never brags or tells anyone about it.

I am grateful for meeting him at Cafe Prague, even though I was not initially excited about our first date. However, it was definitely worth it.
