HOW I DID IT

How I Managed to Get 40,000 Views on Quora in Less Than a Month

On Spaces, consistency, and finding the right questions

As budding writers, we struggle with finding ways to get our work in the public eye. Social media is a method but it is still quite hard to get a following nowadays, especially because many of those platforms don’t let you write long-form content and the ones that do have a falling organic reach

This is why when I found Quora after reading Nicolas Cole’s work, I decided to stick to it in order to get my work out.

My Current Stats

I started with Quora for the first time on January 12, 2020 — a time where many people would say it wasn’t worth it to post in Quora.

I started soon after my experiment with Pinterest and stopped posting on January 28 for four days to test if it works on autopilot. But since then I have written a minimum of an answer a day. And here are the results 41K views and an answer in the second page of Google after two weeks:

But before going into how, let’s look at what Quora is.

What is Quora?

Quora is basically a Q&A website where you can find questions that others ask and answer them or create your own questions. As you start answering questions, you get upvotes, which, in turn, mean more exposure for your work.

At some point, you also start getting questions for you, where they just ask you to create an answer to an already existing question or where they ask you specifically.

By finding answers from your sector or where you want to grow, you can start getting a name there. For example, I mostly answer questions on how to improve your productivity or discipline, and such, most of the questions I get are from those topics. But there are so many topics on Quora that you will most likely find yours

Now that we have the basics, let’s get into why Quora could be useful for you.

Why Quora?

The number one reason would be because, for the number of users it has, it isn’t as saturated as it could be. With this, I mean that with 300 million users and not as many of them answering questions, Quora is a good place to get organic views and create brand awareness

One of the reasons why this happened is because of their Quora Partner Program, where you can get paid by asking questions. This made it so that the number of spammy questions increased, and also made quite a few of the top writers leave the platform.

This could be seen as a problem — or as an opportunity. While it is true that the spammy questions get annoying, it is also true that you can still find great questions, and the dissatisfaction of other writers with the platform is your chance to create a name.

The other advantage of Quora is that it might be the best platform for you. If you are reading this, then you are most likely a writer who wants to grow their brand. This means that you shine with long-form writing, and it also means that you might have fewer opportunities to shine on Instagram or Youtube.

So within all the different platforms to create a name for yourself as a writer, I think that Quora and Medium are the best at the moment.

How to Grow in Quora

The main advantage is that you can find a question related to your topic and get right in front of people who want to know exactly what you have to say. You don’t have to search for them, you go directly to them

But, of course, with such a huge amount of questions, we have to choose the ones that can have the biggest impact. Find questions that have the highest number of upvotes. You can find the upvotes inside the red circle:

It is important to find these questions because the number of votes usually means that many people want the answer to this. And it usually means many people being notified when you post it. So choose the questions that have the highest following in order to start getting exposure.

Write Consistently

Write at least one answer in Quora every day. When you stop answering, you get fewer views. When I stopped for four days as an experiment to see if it could still work in autopilot, I saw that it wasn’t the case

Whenever you stop writing, the number of views falls. This is most likely because the other answers start dying down with time. But another thing that happens is that getting it back to where it was gets harder. This could be because of two reasons:

  1. The answers I chose when I started writing again were ones that received fewer views.
  2. Quora gives you more visibility if you write a lot, and stops doing it when you aren’t consistent.

I can’t really say which one it is, as you can’t tell the number of views an answer will get beforehand. But you can still try to limit the variable to a minimum by choosing questions with around the same number of followers or other tracking methods. As I haven’t done it, I can’t say much but I will try to answer this question in the coming months.

Join Spaces

Spaces can be seen as publications on Medium or boards on Pinterest. They are basically places that people follow and where writing an answer could mean getting it to thousands of people.

So, find the spaces that are the most popular in your field, and try to contribute there as much as you can. Don’t add links when you start because many require your answer to be screened before publishing so start by playing the game and once you have done it for some time you can start building traffic

Use Quora as a Lead Gen

Use Quora not only to answer questions that already exist there but also as a way of repurposing your content. Use fragments of your articles and put them in Quora and link to the original.

So long as the answer is helpful, you might get some people who move towards your blog in order to know more, and this is a stream of people really interested in the topic you are writing about.

But be careful with banning Quora does ban people when they use too many links, so try to keep a ratio of 4:1, where you add links every five articles. This way you can still build without worrying about being banned and losing your work.

For the rest of the four articles you can link to your Quora profile or to other answers you write. This way you can create a wiki strategy within Quora.

So with these tips, you should be able to start using Quora to generate traffic and create a brand. And as in any other platform, the most important thing is to be consistent. While I have managed to get 40K views in only a month, it is also true that I have written 190 answers.

Oh and in my case, I use Quora in Spanish, so the results should be way better if you do it in English.
