A lot of people ask me how I make money blogging.
The answer is both complex and simple: I blog like a hipster.
In other words, I don’t follow the trends. I don’t normally write about what’s popular. I write about what interests me (and others) — even if it’s a bit weird or quirky.
And you know what? It works.
In fact, it works so well that I make $5,000+ each month from my blog (I’m actually making closer to $10k this month).

These five hipster-Esque concepts drive my blogging paradigm on my portfolio of niche content websites. I also blog on other online platforms and occasionally produce content for clients.
Here are five ways that I make $5,000 blogging like a hipster.
Be Unapologetically Yourself
The first step to blogging like a hipster is to be unapologetically yourself.
That means writing from a counter-cultural perspective and thinking for yourself instead of following the herd.
When you do this, you’ll instantly set yourself apart from the majority of bloggers who regurgitate the same old content that everyone else is writing about.
And that’s how you attract attention in the blogosphere.
People are naturally drawn to things that are different, so be different.
Blog About Wierd and Quirky Things
One of the best ways to be different is to write about weird and quirky things — things that most people wouldn’t even think to write about.
But just because you’re writing about weird and quirky things doesn’t mean you should forget about keyword research altogether.
In fact, keyword research is more important than ever when you’re blogging about unusual topics. That’s because you need to make sure people are actually searching for the things you’re writing about.
Otherwise, all your hard work will go to waste.
Fortunately, there are plenty of free and paid tools out there (like Ahrefs, RankIQ, DeapMarket, etc) that can help you find low-competition keywords related to your niche.
The key to hipster blogging is to find topics about which no one else is writing.
It takes more time to uncover these Invisible Keywords (or Ghost Keywords) but, trust me, they’re out there for the taking.
You just have to roll up your sleeves and do the work of keyword research, search intent analysis, and competition assessment.

Buck the Latest Trends in Your Niche
Another way to set yourself apart from the herd is to buck the latest trends in your niche.
Instead of writing about whatever everyone else is writing about, choose a different angle and write something fresh and original. This will not only help you stand out from your competition, but it will also give your readers something new and exciting to read — which is always a good thing.
Ask yourself:
- What’s another perspective on this idea or topic?
- What’s the exact (or extreme) opposite of what everyone else is saying about this subject?
Write With a Strong Voice
Hipsters are known for their strong opinions.
If you want people to read your blog posts, then you need to write with a strong voice — a voice that commands attention and commands respect.
Remember, people are naturally drawn to powerful voices.
Don’t be afraid to speak your mind or share your opinion — no matter how controversial it might be.
One of the best ways to develop a strong voice is by writing about topics you’re passionate about — topics you care deeply about and have strong opinions on.
When you write about topics you’re passionate about, it will come through in your writing — and that’s what will attract readers and followers who are passionate about those same things.
Make sure your writing reflects a hipster level of confidence and conviction.
Be Exceptionally Different But Always the Same
Last but not least, remember that while it’s important to be different, it’s also important to be consistent.
In other words, don’t try to reinvent the wheel with every single blog post.

How I Actually Make Money By Blogging Like a Hipster
Making money blogging is all about creating helpful content and then monetizing it with display ads and affiliate links.
And the key to monetizing your content effectively is to target so-called “ghost keywords.”
The trick is to find ghost keywords that are relevant to your niche and then create content around them. If you can rank highly for these keywords, you’ll get organic traffic to your articles — and that’s when the real money starts rolling in.
Ads on your site will get clicked more often, and people will be more likely to follow your affiliate links.
All of that means more money in your pocket.
