Health and Aging

How I Maintain Muscles and Lower Visceral Fat After My 70s

Summary of my recent public speech in the local community

Writing can be challenging and rewarding, but sometimes obstacles prevent us from fully expressing ourselves. That’s what happened to me recently.

An unexpected writer’s block made me anxious and insecure about sharing my thoughts on this new platform. Perhaps I was afraid of being rejected or judged by others deep down.

But I realized that the only way to overcome this fear and writer’s block was to face it and write anyway. I asked myself what I would lose. My higher self responded, revealing, “nothing except for your ego.”

So I decided to write this post, which is a summary of my recent presentation to a local community that invited me to share my experience related to metabolic health.

This is a topic that I’m very passionate about because I have learned a lot from my senior year’s experiments and 53 years of research in health sciences. I still work a bit as a retired scientist supporting my clients.

My presentation was about 30 minutes long, but I tried to condense it into a five-minute read covering the key points. I hope you will find it informative and useful.

I also want to acknowledge and thank Dr Mehmet Yildiz, my mentor, who helped me develop the script and structure it for an effective presentation.

He is an expert in this field and has written many insightful stories explaining metabolic health details. You can find some of his stories linked in this post.

As we gracefully age, our bodies change, and our health priorities shift.

How do we navigate the complexities of maintaining lean muscles while shedding visceral fat, especially as we enter our golden years?

Our mission here is clear.

We’re seeking to uncover the principles that can help us achieve and sustain healthy muscle mass while minimizing the perils of visceral fat.

These principles are not solely for those in their 20s or 30s. They are the guiding lights for those who’ve accumulated a few more decades and wisdom.

Many of you have sought guidance on this odyssey, as I am now over my 70s. You’ve reached out, curious about my experiences and insights into this intricate dance between muscles and fat.

Some of you asked, “How can I maintain my lean muscles and keep visceral fat at bay as I age?”

Today, I endeavor to distill this vast subject into actionable wisdom, regardless of your dietary inclinations or fitness choices.

My journey is individual, yet it reflects the tapestry of countless lives that have woven the fabric of success and transformation.

My story is just a thread in this tapestry that I weave with observations and learnings from the broader population.

Let my humble experiences guide you.

But remember that our paths are unique. The golden principle is that what works for one may not work for all.

Here is a summary of the key pillars of our success in metabolic health

Nutritional Intelligence

  • Our dietary choices lay the foundation for our health. They are the brushes we wield to paint the canvas of our health.
  • Tailoring our eating habits, and incorporating insights from both wisdom and science, empowers us.
  • A shift from diet as a battleground of ethics to diet as a symphony of health is pivotal.
  • We need to focus on nutritional biochemistry instead of diets.

Workout Wisdom

  • Our exercise routines must be companions in our journey, not adversaries to our well-being.
  • Embrace the changing landscape of our bodies; what once worked may now need refinement.
  • Trade excessive cardio for the embrace of resistance and high-intensity training — a torch to light the path.
  • Both men and women benefit from resistance training.

Elevating the Art of Rest and Recovery

  • Rest is not a sign of weakness but respect for our bodies.
  • Adequate recovery steers us away from the treacherous waters of elevated cortisol.
  • A symphony of workouts and repose — a dance of rejuvenation.
  • Restorative sleep embraces us every night for better recovery.

Navigating the Turbulent Seas of Stress and Inflammation

  • Stress is the unseen enemy, its effects etched into our very genes.
  • Embrace the art of stress management, a shield against the ravages of time.
  • The power of stress modulation, an anthem for a life well-lived.
  • Lowering excessive stress and reducing chronic inflammation which is the root cause of many ailments.

Creating Hormonal Harmony

  • Hormones orchestrate our metabolism and their tune changes with age.
  • Trade the calorie war for a symphony of harmonious hormones.
  • An age-old dance of biochemical elegance, a ballet of balance.

Fires and Freeze of Thermogenesis

  • Embrace the subtleties of thermogenesis, where controlled heat and cold are our allies.
  • Tap into the transformational magic of brown fat, a secret unlocked by temperature changes via cold showers and hot saunas.
  • Heat and cold are like a dance with nature’s elements, a rhythm of metabolic mastery.

Empowering Our Defenses and Healing

  • Unlock the treasure chest of our body’s self-defense (immune and lymphatic system) and self-healing mechanisms.
  • An ode to autophagy and mitophagy, cleansing rituals that rejuvenate our cells.
  • A symphony of self-restoration, a testament to the body’s indomitable spirit.

A Few Final Words

As our journey nears its end, remember that the twilight years need not be a descent into twilight health.

By recognizing the symphony of aging, we can compose a harmonious melody of vitality and well-being.

In conclusion, let me leave you with a verse from this symphony:

In the tapestry of years, a song of health we weave,

With wisdom as our compass, and knowledge, our reprieve.

So let us journey onward, embrace what time bestows,

With strong muscles and hearts ablaze, a life well-lived, it shows.

Thank you for joining me on this symphonic exploration.

May your path be one of strength, resilience, and the joy of a life well-lived.
