Making Money
How I Made My First $ Online
The online world is fraught with challenges, but it’s also ripe with opportunities for those willing to persist, learn, and adapt.
Imagine standing at a crossroads, fresh out of university, pockets full of dreams but also hidden challenges waiting to jump out.
This was me, an architect by training, diving headfirst into the world of freelancing, not knowing the roller coaster ride it was about to be.
The journey from grappling with debt to discovering the treasure trove of online income wasn’t just a path to financial stability; it was a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of growth.
This story isn’t just mine; it’s a beacon for anyone looking to carve out their niche in the digital universe.
Setting the Stage for Success
Understanding the vast digital landscape is crucial. The online world is a bustling marketplace of ideas, services, and products, with freelancing platforms like Upwork and Fiverr serving as gateways to untapped opportunities.
But exploring without a strategy is like setting sail without a compass.
I learned the hard way that resilience, a growth mindset, and the right set of digital tools are your best allies.
The initial days were tough, filled with trial and error.
My ventures into the online realm were met with skepticism — not just from others but also from my inner critic.
Every rejection on Upwork felt like a personal failure.
But here’s the thing about rock bottom — it’s a solid foundation to build upon. Here is the list of tools I use on a daily basis for freelancing work:
- SEMRush
- Ahrefs
- Grammarly
- ChatGPT
- Leonardo AI
- MoneyPro
It taught me that success online requires more than just skill; it demands perseverance, adaptability, and an unwavering belief in your ability to overcome.
Exploring Freelance Opportunities
Freelancing platforms are akin to oceans filled with both treasure and tumult. Creating a profile that stands out amidst a sea of talent was my first challenge.
My first dollar comes from an online forum where she needs an assistant to help her manage SEO link-building outreach.
Today, we call it SEO virtual assistant.
It was back in 2014, and it had just set sail from there. It became my portfolio for further projects in the SEO and virtual assistant market.
Diversifying my skills from architectural drafting to SEO work and content writing became my strategy to navigate through the stormy waters of freelancing.
A significant breakthrough came when I landed a project that perfectly aligned with my skills and interests.
It was a small victory but a giant leap in my freelance journey.
This experience underscored the importance of selecting projects not just for their financial reward but for their alignment with my passion and expertise.
The Power of Content Creation
Venturing into blogging and leveraging platforms like Medium offered a new horizon to explore.
It was here that I found my voice and a community interested in hearing my architectural insights blended with personal growth narratives.
The initial hurdles were daunting, but each published article and positive feedback fueled my drive to keep sharing my experiences.
YouTube and podcasts were other avenues that piqued my interest.
Though I was a novice in video and audio content creation, the challenge was invigorating.
Learning to edit videos, script podcasts, and engage with a live audience added new layers to my digital portfolio.
Monetization through affiliate marketing, sponsored content, and ad revenues became tangible goals, teaching me the value of patience and high-quality content.
It is still single-digit, okay. I will update you on the progress when we make real money on my content creation.
Productizing Your Knowledge
Creating digital products like online courses and ebooks opened a new revenue stream.
It was an opportunity to distill years of architectural practice and teaching experience into accessible, impactful learning resources.
Launching my first course was a blend of excitement and anxiety, but the positive reception and feedback were immensely gratifying.
My current collaboration are with Arkademi, Altruism Initiative and my own YouTube channel.
It reinforced the idea that sharing knowledge could be both fulfilling and financially rewarding.
Investing in Mutual Funds and Stock Market
With the online income stream flowing, I cautiously dipped my toes into investing.
The volatile nature of the stock market alone was intimidating but armed with research and a disciplined approach; I began to see it as another facet of achieving financial independence.
Especially for a more stable route of mutual funds.
My first investment was modest, but it marked the beginning of a journey towards building a diversified portfolio for passive income.
The journey from a struggling freelancer to achieving a semblance of financial stability and personal growth has been nothing short of transformative.
The online world is fraught with challenges, but it’s also ripe with opportunities for those willing to persist, learn, and adapt.
My story is a testament to the fact that making money online is not just a dream but a viable reality for those ready to put in the work.
Whether you’re an architect like me, a writer, a designer, or a developer, the digital landscape is vast and welcoming.
