Abstract

The article titled "How I Made 3.70 in Only a Month Writing on Medium" details the author's unexpected financial success on the platform. Initially, the author wrote with the primary goal of sharing content and reaching a small audience, without considering the potential for monetary gain. However, as the earnings began to accumulate from cents to dollars, the author had to adapt to the demands of a burgeoning writing career, which included re-prioritizing personal commitments. The narrative humorously exaggerates the impact of these small earnings on the author's life, suggesting a shift in focus from financial reward to the joy of writing. The author playfully projects the possibility of earning 10 by the following January, emphasizing the slow but exciting growth of their income from writing.

Opinions

  • The author initially underestimated the financial potential of writing on Medium.
  • The incremental increase in earnings, though small, was a source of excitement and motivation.
  • The pursuit of writing success on Medium led to significant, albeit humorous, life changes.
  • The author's tone suggests that the intrinsic enjoyment of writing is more important than the monetary rewards.
  • There is a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment of the sacrifices made for the sake of writing, such as neglecting appointments, plants, and friendships.

The journey to financial freedom.

Starting out, I never thought much about the monetary aspect of writing on this platform.

I thought it would be a good place to write some articles and maybe a few people would read them. That’s fun.

I would write a couple of articles every week and hit the publish button with little expectations.

But then it happened.

One cent became two cents. 10 cents became 20, and then not a week later I logged on to find my new balance: $1.

Things escalated quickly from there.

I had to make many adjustments to my life to accommodate this newfound writing career. Appointments were canceled, plants went unwatered, and friends were put on ice.

With every several hundred or so keystrokes, I was churning out penny after penny after penny, and by the end of next January, I may have $10.

The lesson:

Forget about money — just have fun writing.
