How I Growth-Hacked My Age In One Year

And you can too!

As a fan of startup culture, I’ve been reading a lot about growth hacking.

For those of you who don’t know, “growth hacking” is a strategy a lot of startups use to get their name out, grow their customer base, etc, all without having to spend tons of money on advertising or expensive PR firms.

But growth hacking isn’t just for startups. Any one of us can “growth hack” aspects of our personal lives, too: Like getting more people to join your book club, or increasing the number of readers on your blog.

In my case, I personally used this strategy to grow my age by a whole year, all within the short span of the last 12 months.

At left: 29, At right: 30. Results: A whopping 3.3% increase in age.

Here’s How I Did It

  • I breathed a lot. I found it crucial to inhale and exhale every few seconds, so as to keep my aging on pace with growth expectations.
  • My body performed basic biological functions. To help with this, I consumed food and water, slept, and exercised from time to time.
  • I avoided standing directly under loose wrecking balls. As tempting as it is to stand beneath a 1500-lb wrecking ball that is clearly about to snap from its chain, I chose not to. It’s important to weed out things that might get in the way of whatever you’re trying to “growth hack.”

Growing from age 29 to 30 in just one year, that’s a staggering 3.3% increase in age!

  • I harnessed the power of social media. All my Facebook friends were alerted on the day of my birthday, and thus knew that I was aging a year. In fact, there was a 1000% increase in social engagement on my Facebook feed, with people wishing me happy birthday. How much did I spend to accomplish this? $0.00. That’s some great ROI!
  • I stayed on Earth. I didn’t use a wormhole to travel to a planet with a gravitational pull different from Earth’s, a journey that would’ve caused me to age at a much different rate, as described in the film Interstellar.
  • I wrote a Medium post about it. Because obviously.

Sure, “growth hacking” is a buzzword, but for me, it produced actual results. Who knows what it can do for you, too!
