I grew up in Akron, Ohio the former Rubber Capital of the World.

Where you may have woke to blue skies, I awoke to brown clouds, the smell of rubber burning, and Blimps.

Akron had a rich history in tire manufacturing and the leading companies had famous founders like Harvey Firestone.

Blimps were magical inventions, especially for a Midwestern kid living in a non-internet world.

Playing sandlot baseball in the yard, it was not uncommon to see a Blimp in the distant twilight.

If you were really lucky, the Goodyear blimp would fly by, with bright neon bulbs flashing “Have a nice day.”

I’m trying not to cry remembering. Those childhood summer days seemed endless. Tommy on first, Mark on second, Bo in the outfield.

Midwest dreams.
