How I Grew My Quora Space To Over 100 000 Followers In Under Six Months
My Top 5 Learnings
Six months ago, I started my first space on Quora. Today it has over 100k followers. Let me share with you some insights I picked up along the way.
According to Quora; Spaces is a new feature that allows people to curate collections and form communities around shared interests and tastes. Put; it’s your own channel where you can share your favorite answers with your followers.
Six months ago, I got an invitation from Quora to start my own space. At that time, I was answering questions occasionally but never even heard of spaces.
This is where my journey towards 100k starts. Below I'll share my top 5 learnings with you.
1. You can't predict what people are going to like
I initially started three spaces. One of them took off while the others barely got any followers. The spaces were named Limitless Learning (the one that took off), Becoming Limitless, and Content Marketing 2.0. I had no clue which one of them would succeed.
Gary Vaynerchuk says close your eyes until you are 29; what he means does not necessarily have to do with your age. It’s the mindset of testing different things to find out what works for you instead of focusing on the first thing you encounter.
2. Double down on what is working
Maybe if I started 1000 more spaces, I would have found one that grew even faster, who knows.
I know that I found one space that grew much more than the others, so I started investing all my time in this one.
3. Grow with your audience
In the beginning, I shared maybe two answers a day. As my audience grew, I started using the queue feature to schedule up to eight answers a day. I learned from a swiss marketer friend that it doesn't make sense to post too frequently when your audience is still small. There won't be enough people online all the time. The algorithm won't be able to show your content, thus resulting in subpar stats properly.
As your community grows, you can post more and more until you reach Gary V nonstop level.
4. Be consistent
I guess this is an almost universal truth when it comes to doing something the right way. If you can't imagine doing something for a year straight, don't even start.
I mean, it's not like you have to be waking up every two hours to post something. With scheduling software, you can manage almost every social media platform so you can live a normal life.
I built Limitless Learning with no more than ten minutes a day. But I posted every single day. And when I knew I wouldn't be able to post, I made sure to queue enough material the day before.
5. Not everybody is your friend
At first, I allowed everybody to become a contributor to my space. Maybe I was naive. However, I soon found out that all but one contributor used the platform to promote different programs and products that weren't relevant to my audience.
I kicked them out without warning and rejected most applications. This doesn't mean I won't check them, but if somebody is too lazy to write one sentence about why I should accept them, it says enough.
The Takeaway
Overall it has been an exciting ride, and I look forward to what this space will bring to me.
I currently earn some money through the Quora earnings program, where they share ad revenue with Space owners. Since I don't sell anything online, I don't really make more than a cup of coffee per month with Quora.
That's fine with me.
Maybe someday I will have my own product; until then, I'll continue experimenting and learning as much as possible.
