How I Got My First 6K Views And Earned $54.94

I was recently elated when one of my articles got passed 5K views. That’s new to me because none of my other stories ever got passed 1K views.

So let’s see what happened.

First, checkout the story headline and stats.

Catchy Headline

At first I wrote “Photoshop 2021 New Depth Blur” as the title of the story before I added “Mind blowing” at the end just before hitting the Publish button.

Why did I do that?

One thing I learned from this article is to use interesting adjectives in your headline.

On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar. — David Ogilvy

Keep it short

The article consist only of 300 words. That’s even lower than the 500 word go-to length for many people. But I didn’t feel the need to expound so much about the topic when all I wanted was to show how cool Photoshop’s new feature is. I gave it a short introduction, a little demo, and a final thought.

Time is the most priceless of currencies.

Publish to a Publication

It took me 13 articles before I decided to submit the next one to a publication. Attila from CodeX reached out to me to have this article curated. I did it and got surprised with the results weeks later.

The stories that are in publications get more initial views that helps it to get off the ground. I suggest you do a lot of experimenting, join some or many publications and write for them to know which one works best according to your writing style.

Is it worth it?

Yes, it’s definitely worth it. I don’t write for a living, heck I don’t even consider myself as a writer. But seeing my story make money makes me so proud of myself.

I’ve seen stories with 5K Views earned $160, while others earned only $10 with same number of views. I admit I don’t fully understand this part of the algorithm, but I suppose the source of views matters significantly.

Final words

Keep on writing. Overnight success is a myth. Your first few articles may not do good but as long as you don’t give up, you’ll be successful eventually.

6 months in Medium and I reached 5K views. Next milestone is 10K views.

Also, appreciate every cent that your stories accumulate.

It’s great to dream big, but the way to achieve big is to start small.

Keep on sharing your knowledge and your experience. More than the money, it’s more fulfilling to teach other curious readers out there.
