As a new writer on Medium, I struggled to get even my first follower. Nothing much happened on day 1 so I started going outside Medium and scrambled to sign up on several Facebook Medium groups. I was successful and managed to get a few reads, but still no followers. Things were not looking good.

It wasn’t until I landed on a strategy proposed by a Medium writer, Ayoub Bouamri, who suggested I start reading articles about how to get 100 followers. He also proposed that new writers like myself take a more direct approach to engage with readers, as well as follow the writer.

Thanks to Ayoub, he taught me how to use the search feature to actively search out articles about this topic. And sure enough, there are lots of stories about this topic, and Ayoub’s article focussed on getting followers in 24 hours! There is even an article about how to get your first 100, 000 followers! I think I will leave that for another day.

I managed to get 100 followers in 5 days and it keeps growing. I am eternally grateful to the Medium community for their support.

In a nutshell, here’s a summary of how to be successful in getting followers.

1. Contribute to the community. Read the article and make a response. Read other commenters and respond to them. Clap for them.
2. Be Assertive. Write that you are a new writer and need followers. Did not the Bible say, Ask And You Will Receive? It worked for me and many others.
3. Kindness matters. You may mention to the writer that you enjoyed the article and have now followed. Hope he/she will follow and reciprocate. Mention that you have some great articles that may be of interest to the writer.
4. Follow other people, just because you did like their articles. Spend some time checking out other writers, just for the fun of it. I did and learned about how one Medium writer quit his $70, 000 a year job to teach guitar full-time while making tons of money with affiliate links. Chances are good that there other people that you are following will follow you back.

5. To summarize: engage, comment, follow. And clap.

6. Finally, land on publications. I am grateful for the support of New Writers Welcome — please follow them, too.

7. Finally, write your article about how you need followers. It worked for me and it will work for you.

One final tip: when you reach the magic number of 100, go back to your menu and select your articles to take part in the Medium Partner Program. It’s not automatic and you will have to select the meter button to make money.
