How I gained 3,000 YouTube subscribers in 1 week
One new feature on YouTube is helping creators grow at super speed, are YOU using it yet?

YouTube is a funny thing. Sometimes you’ll set up a channel and see slow but steady progress over years. Sometimes that same amount of progress can take just a week or two.
Social media experts will cite all sorts of reasons for speedy growth. Gripping thumbnails, trending content, effective advertising, or just pure luck.
Getting discovered on YouTube’s enormous global platform can be difficult. Compared to apps like TikTok that allow for huge reach with little effort, standing out or getting that algorithmic push on YouTube is no simple task.
I’ve been creating and sharing videos on my YouTube channel for a few years now. I make videos on baking recipes, eating challenges, food reviews, and vlogs. The channel has seen slow and steady growth over time, but a recent decision I made saw me gain over 3,000 new subscribers in a week.
What was this decision? YouTube Shorts.
YouTube Shorts
This new feature was introduced in 2021, and it’s pretty obvious to see why. YouTube had toyed with a ‘Stories’ concept previously to rival Instagram. But after TikTok’s explosive growth in 2020 and 2021, the world’s biggest video platform created its own version of fast-paced vertical video sharing to compete with this new contender.
YouTube Shorts allows creators to publish videos up to 60 seconds in length, with in-app editing and text or music overlay options. Yup, just like TikTok.
Now if you’re not already a TikTok or Stories user, this might not be for you. However, if you already create short-form vertical videos and also run a YouTube channel, I recommend creating some Shorts ASAP.

I published about 2–3 Shorts per week for 3 weeks. I noticed the views on these shorter videos were growing faster than my usual 5–20 minute long video content. Suddenly, in week 4, I gained:
- 600,000+ views
- 6,000+ watch hours
- 3,000+ new subscribers
1 video in particular took off spectacularly, and views on all my other Shorts shot up in tandem.
Engage!
Now, I’m trying my best to hook and retain as many of these lovely new viewers as possible.
To do this, I’m liking and replying to as many comments as possible. Apart from the negative or purely hateful ones, no one has (or should have) time for that!
Responding and engaging like this while your video is still hot can sometimes bring those commenters back, racking up another view for each return! Plus, if any of those commenters hadn’t already subscribed, a friendly or helpful reply may just encourage them to do so.
Catch it while you can
My plan for this week and those going forward will be to keep posting Shorts 2–3 times a week. More specifically, I’ll try to hone in on the same niche that brought in all those views.
Of course, there’s no planning or predicting which videos will be popular or not. However, I’d be daft not to create some similar content for those lovely new subscribers while I’m still relevant in their YouTube recommended feeds!

That said, I still fully plan to keep creating and publishing the same longer-form videos at the same time. These are the ones I enjoy making most. They also provide more income per view compared to the high-engagement Shorts.
While I don’t think this new format will prove any threat to TikTok, it’s certainly allowing YouTubers to cash in on TikTokers’ style of success. It might just be worth getting into YouTube Shorts while they’re still relatively new.
Have you tried playing with YouTube Shorts yet?
