How I Gained 2000+ Email Subscribers In a Year

Sometimes, I’m just dumb. Because I can’t see the obvious. This is what happened when I started collecting email addresses without really knowing it.

Here’s the story.

Late last year, I designed a few app icon packs for iOS. After unsuccessfully trying to sell them on Gumroad, I decided to give them away for free. With the option for people to donate. Sidenote: That made a surprising amount of money.

Immediately after I started offering the icon packs for free, the first downloads came in. Who doesn’t like free stuff, right?

Only later did it dawn on me. With every sale (or free giveaway) on Gumroad, I got a new member on the customer list.

This has grown to over 2000 customers. By accident, sort of. The best part: If I sell something new now, there’s already an audience in place.
