How I Failed Writing According to News Break’s Rules and Still Made $1,000
This is not telling you to follow my example.

I started writing for News Break in late November and made $1,000 for my January writing. It took me a while to get started since I was unsure how to get started. I do appreciate the tip from Gayle Kurtzer-Meyers to republish my Medium articles otherwise I would still be sitting around wondering what to do with my News Break account.
Personally, I’m the type of guy who likes to do his own thing. It is funny that I was in the Army for 20 years where the hierarchy of the organization lives off of discipline and rules. Yet, somehow I made it.
When News Break first came out, they wanted you to write at least three articles a week. Sometimes, I submitted an extra article or two since some articles were not read by anyone. News Break is an interesting system and possibly still trying to find its purpose.
The mission of News Break was to cater to local audiences in the United States. Most of my articles were not considered local but general information. The more local your articles are, the higher score you ranked according to News Break. Most of my articles rank between 1 to 3 and my highest was a 7. The highest your article can rank is a 10. Their system also factors into the originality and quality of your article.
In addition to these requirements, initially, News Break required that writers had to have 500 followers in order to get paid. I was far short of followers. I currently have 303 followers.
I wonder if the amount of articles that I wrote, and some generated views that helped factor in getting paid. Some things were confusing with the pay system of News Break.
News Break changed the rules
Recently, News Break decided to change how they will pay writers. They believe a higher ranking Content Value (CV) score will generate more views and impressions. I think the jury is still out on that.
As I mentioned, many of my articles are low-ranking according to their CV score. Despite the low ranks, I have had articles generate hundreds to thousands of views. Their system may have some bugs that still need to be worked out.
Under the new rules, writers will get paid $4 for every 1000 views if the article has a CV rank between 1–4. Articles that rank between 5–10 CV, the writer receives $10 per 1000 views. The maxim amount a writer can receive is $1,500 per month.
I am in three News Break Facebook writing groups. Personally, I read over comments some writers have left complaining about the News Break scoring system.
After receiving $1,000 from News Break, I’m not sure if I will come close to that amount again unless they change the payment rules. Most of my writing is not focused on local cities.
On the one article that I received a 7, I barely mentioned the city. I think the News Break platform still has some bugs to work out.
