How I Earn $30 / Hr To Read Medium Stories

My rate isn’t always $30; sometimes, it’s $18.75.

I read a lot of stories in this venue about side hustles and schemes to earn a buck here or there. But I have to tell you; I think I’ve found a great way to earn cash regularly doing what I like: reading and writing. Even as I am typing this, I know I’ll be paid whether anyone reads this story or not. Medium payment for reader engagement will be icing on the cake.

You wonder, maybe even anxious to learn, how I suckered someone to pay me to write and read. It’s simple, and I haven’t misled anyone. I have used my resources.

I have several part-time jobs. Each of these jobs frequently has downtime in which I must be present, but I’m not actively engaged. That is when I do my reading and writing. In my rest, I still get paid because I’m on call. Without further adieu, let me tell you about my part-time jobs.

Online educational resource person

I work for a national educational non-profit that supports schools and their students. The COVID environment has driven most teacher training and student support online through video conferencing. My employer has scheduled student study sessions on weekday evenings and Saturdays this spring. You have probably heard the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” This phrase is especially true if the horse is a high school student. Last Tuesday, I was on camera at the appointed time, ready to deliver Advanced Placement (™) Exam coaching to students across the USA, and no one showed up. My supervisor told me to stay on camera for the entire hour if someone joined late. If I’m on camera, I’m on the clock. I’ll be paid my $30/hr rate.

How to get this sort of job? — There are many educational non-profit organizations and for-profit companies that provide online services. I recommend you Google search.

What credentials are needed for this sort of job? The organization I work for requires active or retired state teacher certification. Other organizations may accept industry work experience.

School Substitute Teacher

I substitute teach for two schools. One is a public high school, and the other is a private middle-high school. Teachers in Texas are guaranteed a certain amount of time within their on-campus workday for planning, preparation, and conferences. When I sub for a teacher, I work their schedule. I usually get that planning and preparation time. My planning periods on the subbing assignment are at least 90 minutes long. $18.75/hour is pretty good for reading and writing.

In addition to the prep time, I can often read and write during class. Two activities are the most common lesson plans.

Give the kids a test. — Monitoring students taking a test requires active monitoring and walking around observing. Honest students will remain honest when they have the support of a caring teacher. So when the kids are testing, I don’t get much reading and writing done.

Have the kids work independently on a project. — This is a good time for reading and writing. The teacher will have prepped the students for independent work. Often they’ll be working collaboratively. These situations rarely require more of me than to be the adult in the room and monitor the students.

How to get this sort of job? — Google search the public and private schools in your area. My advice is to seek out the best schools. Schools with high achievement standards will make for a much easier day.

What credentials are needed for this sort of job? In public schools, retired teachers certainly have an edge in subbing. Ruby Lee, an active Medium writer, has told me there are issues with Georgia Teacher Retirement for Georgia retirees wanting to substitute in the public schools. In Texas, state retired teachers have specific rules to follow when subbing in public schools. Anyone with some college hours can substitute in Texas, though college graduates are preferred. Private schools set their criteria.
