How I Developed My Personal Style and Built a Long-Lasting, Sustainable Wardrobe I Love to Wear
Discovering my values when it comes to clothing helped me build a wardrobe that I love and that reflects my personal style.
When it comes to fashion and personal style, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not exactly a pro. Not even an amateur, honestly.
I’ve always struggled to differentiate between trends and my own preferences, and I never really understood how to define a personal style. In fact, I used to think that caring about your appearance and how others perceive you was superficial and not worth investing time or money into.
As I’ve delved deeper into the world of fashion and self-expression through clothing, I’ve come to realize that there’s more to it than just superficiality.
The key for me was shifting my focus from trends and societal expectations to identifying my own values when it comes to clothing.
Through trial and error, I’ve come to realize that I value effortlessness, functionality, comfort, and versatility in my wardrobe. These values guide my clothing choices and have helped me build a small collection of garments that I absolutely love.
For example, I prioritize functionality in my clothing. I used to struggle with gaping buttons and sudden openings due to my body shape and preference for crossbody bags, so I now opt for shirts with covered button plackets, fabric-covered buttons, or no buttons at all to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions. I also only own bottoms with pockets, which has been a game-changer.
I also value versatility when it comes to my wardrobe. I want to own a small number of low-maintenance clothes that I can wear throughout the year, so I opt for reversible garments, items that can easily be dressed up or down, and that can be worn front-back and vice versa. I also opt for breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and fast-drying fabrics that can be worn in any weather or season.
Most importantly, I value ease and comfort in my clothing. I don’t want to overthink what I wear, how I wear it, and when, so I opt for loose clothing, skin-friendly fabrics, and anti-theft bags that allow me to be present in the moment and not worry about my appearance or belongings.
Discovering my values when it comes to clothing helped me build a wardrobe that I love and that reflects my personal style.
And I think that’s the key — focusing on your own values and preferences, rather than on keeping up with the Joneses, is what will help you develop your own personal style.
Give it a try and see how it can help you!
