How I Became a Reiki Practitioner

At first, I thought Reiki was B.S.

At first, I thought Reiki was B.S.

Maybe, maybe not, but I wasn’t convinced.

It sounded like an interesting concept when I first heard about Reiki, but I initially dismissed it. I had no idea how it would change my life.

Then I read the research on Reiki. It is clear something is going on there, more than just a placebo. Having that knowledge opened my mind up to receive a little more. It felt a little easier to put credence into randomized, double-blind, controlled studies.

Then I read how several major oncology hospitals offer Reiki to their patients. On some level, that seemed to give Reiki validity.

Maybe in my head, I thought, if these high-level, esteemed, reputable hospitals use it, it can’t be complete horse manure.

Once I crossed those scientific bridges, it made the esoteric easier for me to slip into. I don’t know why that is, but that was my personal experience.

What’s really funny to me about this is that I have ALWAYS felt other people’s energy.

It’s part of why I became a therapist and gravitated to person-centered care. It’s part of how I fell in love with the limbic system and neuroscience. It’s part of why I love biology. It’s part of why I love dogs.

But the idea of “energy work” felt too woo-woo, too esoteric, too outlandish, too strange.

It felt like it might be completely phony bologna.

Something for hippies or witchy women to practice.

YET — I have been engaged in a version of energy work the entire time I’ve been working in the counseling field.

Now — I’m not supposed to say that because of liability — and I always stay within my scope of practice. & I have not been practicing Reiki with my therapy clients. But what I mean is that the emotional colors of therapy, the resonance of people’s energy, their vibes, my life as an “empath” — I’ve always worked with these ideas/ energy fields/ nuances of vibration.

I just wasn’t on the Reiki train. Yet.

I first heard about Reiki on a trip to Ecuador. I was in my 20s then (I’m in my 40s now). Two ladies traveling with us were Reiki masters. One day on a bus traveling from one town to another, they tried to show me how to do hand exercises.

I felt like I was fumbling it. I felt like I was doing it wrong. I now know that I was trying to control it instead of just allowing myself to experience it.

In 2022 I started trusting things in my life in a new and different way. I started trusting myself differently. I got out of my own head. I got out of my own way. I trusted what I’ve always known. I’ve trusted what I’ve always felt.

I started to cultivate a new skill. I accustomed my hands to focus on the energy. I practiced, and my skill improved. I devoted time, energy, and attention to this new kind of learning.

The more time I spent learning about Reiki and practicing its techniques, the more intrigued I became. It was a spiritual journey. It was a process of discovering and cultivating energy within myself as well as around me. The ability to recognize and direct energy was utterly new to me, yet entirely natural at the same time.

It was a new avenue for me to explore self-healing.

I have gradually built up my confidence in my skills as a healer. This personal confidence and trust in my skills and capacity as an energy worker has enabled me to offer private sessions — a big step forward in this evolution.

For me, my journey was more about trusting myself and trusting the process. I was only able to truly do that once the other pieces were in place. It made it easier for me to step through the doorway.

It was through trusting myself that I was able to truly experience Reiki. It was only through trusting myself that I was able to learn, grow, and develop. It was only through trusting myself that I was able to get out of my own way — which, in this case, meant getting out of my comfort zone.

My journey into becoming a Reiki practitioner has been one of discovery and transformation. It has taught me invaluable lessons about healing myself and others. It has helped me develop spiritually and deepen my understanding of my environment and connection with my body.

If you’re looking for ways to improve your physical or emotional well-being, consider giving energy work a try. You never know what positive changes it could bring to your life.
