How I Almost Made $100 in My First Month Writing on Medium

Photo by Colin Watts on Unsplash

This month of August, I almost made $100 by writing on Medium! I honestly don’t know how I stumbled upon Medium, although knowing myself, I have a pretty vague idea:

One night after getting home from drinking a few bottles of gin with my friends, I may have googled something about philosophy — because you know, I’m drunk and pretentious like that.

I found one of Zat Rana’s articles here and that was the start of my semi-obsession with Medium.

That was about June this year (2019), the next morning I thought of migrating a few of my articles from my small and dead WordPress blog to Medium, like this one that I wrote when I was about 19:

I didn’t actually start writing here until August, I was too obsessed with reading stories and philosophical articles.

I’m just like most writers on Medium, I dream of cracking a few bucks to help with my monthly expenses or just a few to help my boba milk tea addiction and this month didn’t disappoint!

Here’s how I managed to earn almost $100 in my first month writing on Medium:

Writing consistently on Medium

My goal for the month of August is to write at least one article per day just because I want to gain discipline in writing.

At first, I really didn’t know that writing and publishing consistently on Medium equated to making more money. I was just some kid challenging herself to become a better writer.

But writing and publishing every day (except for maybe a day or two) are major factors in me making that much on Medium considering it’s just my first month of writing.

A lot of veterans here can attest that this is the main key to all this hooplah on Medium.

Publications: Big or small? Or none at all?

I have read a lot of ‘how to + Medium’ articles here and most, if not all of them say that publishing with publications help gain traction on your posts.

So I tried going after one. My first article that ever got into a publication was this:

under the publication The Ascent. I was stoked considering this is one of them good pubs out here.

I also tried self-publishing two articles recently, here’s one:

And just yesterday (August 30), I was e-mailed that the largest active publication on Medium The Startup wanted my article:

I also publish a lot with 1-One-Infinity which is a small publication that’s kind of a community in itself for all writers founded by the legendary Michael K. Spencer. Thanks, Michael!

I’ve published articles with small and big publications, and also tried self-publishing.

My take on this is that with bigger pubs like The Startup, I definitely got more views but it didn’t really have much difference in terms of number of fans.

Big, small or none at all, they pretty much got the same.

Make of this what you will.

Promote on Facebook groups for Medium

I promote on Facebook groups for Medium like crazy.

Here is a list to help you out:

  • Medium Partner Program Friends
  • Medium Magic
  • Medium Mastery
  • Medium New Writers
  • Medium Writers and Bloggers

Those Medium groups have very friendly and respectful members. Be sure to be the same and don’t spam your articles or you might get booted out.

Make friends within the Medium community

Interact with other people. Read other people’s work, highlight, clap and comment, not because you want them to do the same to yours but because you genuinely like what you’re reading.

Trust me, I feel it when people are commenting just for the heck of it.

Also, I’ve found many amazing writers on the Medium groups listed above. Making genuine connections with fellow writers not only help you gain traction here on Medium but also can help you become a better writer.

Personally speaking, I think Medium is a good community to be a part of regardless of the issues arising these couple of weeks.

It helps people build a following and a portfolio while having an incentive.

To give you guys the peace of mind that I’m not making this crap out, here’s a transparent view of my earnings for August:

Yup. Just short of $8.31 to crack that hundred! This definitely isn’t something to brag about but just a little nudge that if a bummy twenty-something year old like myself can do it, so can you.
