My KDP Business Almost Died

What happened?

Having started my KDP low-content business back in July 2019, and after having initially struggled for around a year or so, I managed to find success. Since March 2021, I began to consistently earn between $6,000-$8,000 a month. However, this almost came crashing down after a long period of laziness and complacency.

From February 2022 all the way to around the same time the following year, I published very few books. I was complacent and thought that the books I currently have would retain their rankings and continue to generate sales. At first, and for almost a year, they did, but since around March this year, I noticed a huge dip in sales. This got me worried! And what’s worse, Amazon also announced an increase in the printing costs of books which was due to take place in June 2023. June came about, and although I increased the prices of my books to retain the same amount of royalties, my overall sales decreased. And as my ad costs remained the same, my profit took a huge hit!

A year prior, I was making between £3,000-£3,500 in profit, but now I was only earning around £1,800-£2,000. I regretted not publishing books during the period I took off, and I thought to myself, had I just published a few books a week, even if my monthly royalties didn’t increase, I would’ve at least retained the amount I was making.

Moving forward

We all make mistakes, and being complacent was a HUGE mistake I made. As nothing could be done about the dip in sales, I decided to NEVER again stop publishing books. For the last 4 months: June-September, I put my head down and started creating again. At the time of writing this article (11th October), I’m due to make around £2,600 in profit this month (from $6,200 in royalties). Not fully recovered yet, but on course.

In summary

Complacency is a huge enemy to success. It’s important to understand this to never stop what you’re doing when you find success. I learned this the hard way and hope those of you reading this will take a lesson from my story.
