How Hollywood is Changing to Become Fashionably Detrimental
Why race-bending and gender-bending characters in Hollywood isn’t helping
In today’s society, there is a growing trend to become more inclusive. Be it including different minority ethnic groups, becoming more acceptive despite different sexual orientations, and embracing equality between men and women, there has been a positive change in the world. This is great news and I, like many others, would love to embrace this progress and continue to advance the call for society to become more inclusive.
In a similar vein, Hollywood’s attempt to become more inclusive includes the trend to change the characters’ sex or race to “embrace diversity”. Race-bending is the act of changing a character’s perceived ethnicity during the adaptation of a work. Similarly, Gender-bending the act of changing one’s gender. While it is good that there are attempts made to better portray everyone regardless of their differences, I think that this trend of ‘race and gender-bending’ is a weak blanket solution that does not help and might instead, become harmful.
One good example of it not helping is the remake of the classic: ‘Ghostbusters’. By trying too hard to change the identities of the characters, the directors spoiled the integrity of the source material and were unable to truly showcase the diversity that could have been included. Instead, they chased after incorporating the original comedic style and forced the actresses to act out a story that was obviously unsuitable. In many cases like the ‘Ghostbusters’ remake, Hollywood chased too hard after the goal of changing the characters’ perceived identities instead of trying to make changes with actual impacts. This creates a situation where the original creators of the work and the positive social cause of change is disrespected.
Instead of simply meaninglessly altering the identities of the characters, I believe that more effort should be put into creating stories of diversity. Movies like ‘The Black Panther’, ‘Wonder Woman’, and to a small extent, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ were impactful movies that displayed a wider diversity to moviegoers well. Marvel’s new Nick Fury is another example of a positive change. Instead of simply changing the character’s ethnicity, they molded a version of the character after Samuel L Jackson, creating a completely different character that we have all come to know and love. Similarly, instead of simply changing the ethnicity of the original Spider-Man, the writers created a different character arc for Miles Morales. The different character arc was not only more suitable, but it also showcased an entirely different set of stories and problems. If these changes can be successful in the comics, I believe that Hollywood can learn from this and make positive changes to their future movies as well.
What’s important for Hollywood now isn’t just going through the motion of casting a more diverse set of actors and actresses. It is essential for them to create stories that are more diverse and embrace the differences between all the cultures behind the characters. Only then would they be able to truly make an impact on society.
