How Does My Intuition Speak To Me?

An Advanced and Integrated Approach to Intuitive Action

I’ve spoken in the past about telling the difference between the intuition and the ego. In that piece, I discussed that one of the primary ways we distinguish between the two is resistance. When we feel strong resistance in reaction to a soul urging, it’s the ego’s response. The more familiar we are with what our ego sounds like, looks like and feels like, the easier it becomes to move from a connected place.

I also talked about the qualities of intuition versus the ego. And while I stand by all of that, I am in this moment, moving through something so powerful I’ve come into new insight about intuition that I felt needed to be shared.

The notification of that? Was excitement. I got really excited to share this information and so I knew it was right to move forward. Why do I share this? To exemplify my point.

Separation Between Ego and Intuition Isn’t the End

In that last piece, I talked about how the ego is loud and emotional and the intuition is quiet and still, unemotional. That’s true. But humans, we’re creatures of emotion. And when we don't feel for an extended period of time it’s a sign that something is wrong. Yes, even if it’s a result of spiritual awakening or growing detachment if it lasts too long, it’s not balanced.

As humans, we’re here to experience the full range of what we can on Earth. And emotion is a big part of that. If we were meant to experience this world as disembodied, unfeeling souls, we would be.

Just as consciousness expresses itself in duality as both manifested and unmanifest so too are we both human and divine. Integrating the whole isn’t about valuing one aspect of ourselves over the other. Listening to intuition may begin by learning to piece apart the intuition and the ego. It may begin with separation. But it doesn’t end there.

How Does the Intuition Speak?

I find that my intuition sometimes speaks to me through thought. Like this morning, I’ll wake up with inspiration and excitement to get something down on the page. Sometimes it speaks to me through signs: number signs (like 717 and 11:11, 222 and 444) and symbols that have meaning for me (feathers, snakes, etc.). Those are things recognized through the mind. The mind is the ultimate seat of power of the ego, yet we still trust it enough to receive intuitive downloads.

Much like in my article about the full awakening versus a partial awakening though, we can struggle to accept that intuition speaks to us through the heart as well, through emotions.

Our emotions can be so volatile and changeable. Most of society learns, and certainly I learned, not to trust them. We get taught to disregard them, to place our faith in greater “certainties” like science (although science is all about belief; many people didn’t believe in gravity or that the earth was round for a very long time. Because while it is observable, it’s not directly experienced in our day-to-day. It seems like we’re walking on flat ground.)

We’ve learned to trust in what we can see, touch, smell, taste, what we can measure and quantify. But consciousness is unquantifiable. It is both the manifest and the unmanifest and, if we’re at our most conscious, we flow seamlessly between both experiential phenomena.

Stay with me.

Adding Nuance To Distinguishing Between Ego and Intuition

Yes, when we first are learning to distinguish between the ego and the soul, it’s a fine distinguishing point to acknowledge your loud feelings as ego and your quiet knowing as soul. But after Intuition 101, you level up to Intuition 102, and you start learning (through experience) that emotion is one of the ways intuition speaks to us.

And so it becomes more nuanced. You, like consciousness, have to learn to start flowing. Start recognizing the divine in the human experience. Like consciousness, you are dual in nature. And the integrated version of you is the one that can best serve the whole.

This collective doesn’t need a disembodied, disconnected version of you. If that were the case, you wouldn’t be here in human form. The only way you connect deeply and plug into your purpose is by fully engaging in the whole, integrated experience of being embodied consciousness.

So sometimes your intuition is that dread in the pit of your stomach telling you not to get on the plane. Sometimes, it is that excitement bubbling up in your chest that says to apply for that new job. Sometimes it is that overwhelming surge of love you can’t contain when you look at someone.

So you might ask: How do I learn to distinguish between the ego and soul if feelings are also intuitive notifications, then? How do I learn to trust that what I’m feeling is true?

The Hard and Fast Rule

Some of this is going to be about learning to trust yourself and your instincts more than it is about hard and fast rules, and I know some of you (note: the most science-minded of you lol) will struggle greatly with that. But it’s true.

Here’s one rule though:

Your intuition doesn’t speak through fear. Fear is the opposite frequency of unconditional love. And unconditional love, being a pure expression of the highest consciousness, can’t coexist with it. That’s why choices boil down to love or fear, every time.

Fear is also a fundamental tool that the ego mind uses to keep us safe. But our souls know that we’re always safe and protected because whatever we experience is part of this great unraveling journey toward expanding consciousness. So, when intuition speaks, it’s not going to come through the same avenue that the ego uses so frequently. That’s one easy way to discern if it’s intuition speaking.

Learning The Ego to Know The Soul

Beyond that, however, the answer is, of course, getting to know the ego very well. I’m talking so well that it never surprises you. It never shows up in places you don’t expect. You know your ego so well that you recognize all of its stories, all of its sneak attacks, all of its plays.

You’re not afraid of anything your mind could throw at you. You don’t run from yourself. When you have that much clarity, that much intimacy with your shadow self, you’re not in any way fragmented. The ego is fully accepted and so it’s fully in service to the whole. There’s very little control that it has anymore.

At this point, you’re so used to feeling equanimous, so used to feeling at ease, that strong emotion now becomes a notification to move in a certain direction.

Because you’re not inundated with feelings at every moment anymore, because you’ve learned to be less reactive, or at least to recognize your reactivity for what it is, you know what it’s not. You know when an emotion isn’t coming from your pain body, isn’t coming from your traumatized mind. You’ll recognize it as something purer and truer, and it becomes easier to listen to it.

Like everything, though, this is a practice. The first couple of times, hell the first dozen times, you have to make this call — to trust that your intuition is speaking to you through your emotions — it’s going to be difficult. You may struggle to trust your own discernment.

That’s okay. Trust anyway. Trust yourself to make the right call. And know that in doing so, regardless of the choice, regardless of the outcome, you’re learning this new skill to become better at moving from a place of intuition. And that work is always going to serve you.
