How do you recover from losing a loved one

It’s like losing a child

It’s hard to believe it’s almost been a year. Maggie Mae had my heart from the first day I met her. She lived such a short life!

“Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in. ” — Mark Twain

It was seven years ago that I first laid eyes on her! She barely fit in two hands. I remember the breeder saying that Cavalier King Charles didn’t live long lives! I had no idea that it would only be six years.

The time went so fast. She was the sweetest dog ever. A little bigger than most — she was filled with love. Unconditional love.

When she started getting sick, I knew it immediately. I took her to the vet and spent a small fortune trying to help her get better. It helped for about a month. They say you’ll know when it’s time. A few things I know:

  1. Dogs love you like no other. Treat them the same!
  2. When it’s time to say goodbye, it’s the hardest decision you will ever make.
  3. Make the decision for your dog, not yourself.
  4. When I lay next to Maggie Mae and watched her take her last breath, it broke my heart in two.
  5. I still have her ashes by my bedside and will spread them where she loved the most soon. Just not yet.
  6. Good luck! Know that your pet gave you the best life ever!
  7. Remember to thank all the wonderful friends and writers who respond to your posts. They have your back and feel your pain!

I wrote this shortly after my sweet Maggie Mae crossed the rainbow bridge. Nothing had prepared me to the loss. When her pictures come up in memories, it’s bittersweet. I see her dancing in heaven with her friends and sending rays of sunshine and love!
