How do you get 1.8K Followers Without Writing a Single Story?
By Creating a Name for Yourself

Medium is a labyrinth of catchy titles, alluring images, stories, poems and links. Every day, I get lost weaving my way in, through, and around stories, publications, writers, poets and so much more.
I began writing on Medium in early January 2021. Lock-down was in full force, I work from home and needed an outlet, so I decided to knuckle down and start publishing on the platform.
I used to check my stats every day and, after two months, I have 245 followers. Not bad, eh? Not great, either. Others have racked up 1K in a month, but they must spend hours mindlessly stabbing the follow button to reach that number. Or am I being cynical? How else would people be able to find them and follow them so quickly?
If there is one factor that is key to gaining a huge following, or so I have read, it is perseverance. All the greats on here tell us to write, write and then write some more. If you publish good quality stories aimed at your niche readership regularly, then over time, you will succeed.
I have touched on measuring success before — is it monetary gain, number of claps, number of fans (is a fan the same as a follower, or is it somebody who claps you?) You see, I am still new to all of this and still learning.
So, who is this mysterious character on Medium who has 1.8K followers but ‘hasn’t written any stories yet’? It’s Joe Wicks the Body Coach. Now, I was slow to join the JWBC band. My daughter raved about him and I heard his name mentioned almost daily on the news about all the wonderful things he was doing during lock-down by keeping the nation moving and motivating them through health and fitness.
Now that I have discovered Joe Wicks, I love him (sorry, Mrs Wicks, but I’m sure you understand — he is a very loveable character). I do daily workouts with him, here in my writing den, and cannot champion what he does enough. He has a ‘boy next door’ personality and is a thoroughly cheeky chappie.
He connects with people of all ages. I can see that. His personality draws you in and you feel like you know him. And that is what happens to people who get huge exposure on social media, television, podcasts, etc. and in doing so, create a massive following. He has worked incredibly hard to build up that following and continues to work hard. So much so that merely his name attracts 1.8K followers on Medium with not one story under his belt. Not that I am envious in the least…
It takes a certain personality to do what JW does and he is extremely good at it. Hats off to him — I genuinely think he is amazing. But please, Joe, can you share some of those 1.8K followers with me?
I know. It doesn’t work like that, but guess what? He now has one more follower to add to his not-so-shabby list because I couldn’t resist!
I followed him because I think he’s a great guy but, more importantly, because he is good at what he does. His Body Coach sessions are easy to follow, he connects with his audience, and ultimately, he gets his message across in a fun and motivational way.
That is why he deserves every single Follower that he has. I aspire to you, Joe. Don’t worry, I’m not going to start a fitness blog or YouTube video. What I am going to do though is knuckle down, keep writing, keep publishing, and hopefully, I will hit that 1.8K badge. Or more, even, if I am good at what I do and make a name for myself. Readers will hopefully continue to enjoy my work and keep following me.
