How Do You Deal With Change?

Do You Sink or Swim?

We go through our lives treading a very similar path day in, day out, till one day something gets thrown at us that we weren’t expecting, and this is our make-or-break point.

We can either sink or swim.

It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, at the end of the day any spanner in the works will create some sort of change in our life, even if we don’t want it.

It is this point that will shape the course of our life in the following period of time.

The choice is ours

If we face the changes with acceptance, life will flow and even if it doesn’t feel easy.

Acceptance allows us to channel our energy in a more productive way that allows us to move forward. We create our new normal, which we eventually become accustomed to till it doesn’t feel so ‘new’ anymore.

Or we can choose to face these changes with resistance, causing life to feel difficult.

This affects our mental health and our energy as we are pouring far too much of it into stopping things that are often out of our control. We spend so much time fighting this that we allow opportunities to pass us by without realizing it.

Change is a hard thing to accept sometimes, especially when it was forced upon us.

Everyone struggles with this to an extent. We want to hold onto what we had so hard but it’s like holding on to the platform while the train is trying to move. We can get on board or be left behind.

Acceptance

Acceptance is the toughest part of dealing with change. When we can’t accept it, it becomes harder to move on.

Acceptance is the first step to most things, like accepting our emotions, our behavior and even accepting a problem that we may have.

To begin embracing change, we must first accept the situation for what it is, no matter how hard it may feel.

Rebuild

Once we have accepted our situation we can start to rebuild.

Rebuilding can look different to many people; it just depends on each individual situation. It could be rebuilding life in a new city, rebuilding a relationship, or even rebuilding beliefs that we held.

This is actually a very exciting part of change even if it doesn’t feel like it because this is where we plant the seeds of our future. After the initial change, this is the turning point of where we would like our lives to go.

Once we rebuild our lives and create our new normal, we slowly but surely become accustomed to this life and eventually get to a place of recognizing how beneficial this change was to us in some way.

Takeaway

I personally don’t believe that time heals all. Sure, it does to an extent, but it is how we spend that time that makes all the difference.

If we spend our time, struggling to let go, resisting change, and living in the past, we will not heal and move on.

On the flip side, if we spend that time honoring and accepting the hand we have been dealt with and using our energy in a way that benefits our future selves, we will find ourselves stronger and in a better place mentally, physically, and spiritually.

It’s not easy and we shouldn’t convince ourselves otherwise.

Change can be so hard; this is something we should not allow ourselves to overlook.

With the right attitude and coping techniques, this hardship can be overcome, till we can look back and realize how much our circumstances taught us and allowed us to grow.
