How David Perlmutter’s Highlighting is Flagging a Medium Glitch!

It’s alerting writers to Medium’s failed subscriber distribution

Screengrab by author

David Perlmutter’s highlighting is legendary and has become a bit of a joke. I’m a fan because even if no one else reads my stories, David will have a look! 😁

The weird thing I realized recently is that if David doesn’t highlight a story, it’s because something has gone awry!

It’s usually a sign that Medium’s distribution to my subscribers has failed. I only spotted this recently, when I started to change images on older stories. I’d change a photo, save the story, and within 5 minutes, David had highlighted it!

Hallelujah!

My changes triggered the distribution to subscribers — because it failed the first time.

Does David realize he’s highlighting something from last October? Goodness knows. This only happens on stories going back to about September when I got my first subscriber.

If the story successfully went to subscribers when it was first published, it won’t go again when I make changes.

But the failure of subscriber distribution is a glitch in Medium’s system that’s worth knowing about. Because some stories don’t go when you first publish (despite having the ‘send to subscribers’ box ticked). That’s losing us views at the point of publication. It seems to be a problem that’s more common on short form stories.

David provides a valuable service. The absence of his highlighting alerts his favourite writers to a glitch! When he highlights, we know the system is working well. If we’re paying attention anyway.

So I love it that David is one of my subscribers. Even when an article performs badly, David takes a look!

BUT how the heck does he have time to read everyone’s stories? It’s a total mystery! He’s a writer too — does he live in a parallel world where there’s a 48 hour day?

And what’s the reason for the highlighting? My guess is it helps him focus on what he’s reading. And to show some appreciation for the bits he likes best.

This makes me paranoid that the other bits are crap! But that’s OK. 100% highlighting is probably not ideal.

Thank you, David. 😁

I bet you didn’t know you were highlighting a problem, did you?
