Summary

A Medium writer is celebrating the success of their stories, particularly one that gained significant traction outside Medium's paywall after sharing it on Facebook, and is seeking input on how to balance exposure with monetization within the platform.

Abstract

The author has experienced a surge in views, with one story garnering over 2,600 views, primarily from non-Medium members, leading to a reflection on the dynamics of content reach and monetization. Despite the story's success, the author expresses a dilemma as most views did not contribute to direct earnings through Medium's partnership program. The article that went viral, "I Brought an Air Fryer, and Now I’m Set for Life," was shared on Facebook, which seems to have played a pivotal role in its widespread visibility. The author values the insights from reader comments and acknowledges Medium as an excellent platform for writers to reach a broad audience. However, they are seeking advice on how to channel such exposure into the Medium paywall to earn revenue while maintaining the quality and engagement of their stories.

Opinions

How Come Most of My Views This Week Were Outside the Medium Tent

I have a good problem, but I need your help in understanding the problem

Photo by Karolina Grabowska from Pexels

I’ve had seven of my stories on Medium reach over one thousand views in the last four months. Hallelujah! One reached over four thousand. I’m so happy. But, the last one snuck out of the Medium tent went viral with over two and a half thousand views. How did that happen? Don’t get me wrong; I’m pleased for the many who viewed and read my story.

Here it is

The results

My Medium graph

You noticed that of the 2.6k views, only 402 people are Medium members. Therein lies my dilemma.

Which contributed to my week’s views

My week in Medium

But I received great comments

The interesting back story is this story took me the least time to write. It flowed out of me like water over a dam. Maybe I’m on to something. What do you think? The comments I received were excellent and insightful. Here are four of the responses I received. Judy Owens Great lead paragraph. Piree Lua, I Loved the happiness in your story. Cathy Coombs; I loved this because you talked to the reader. And Bev Potter wrote; This piece has some great, great lines. These comments will help me to write better stories. So, I’m delighted with this story and how the readership grew.

But, I still need your help

Of course, we all want our stories inside the Medium paywall. It puts milk and eggs in our fridge, right? But I’m asking for your help on this one. The only place I put this story was on Facebook, and an explosion took place. I like the numbers listed above, but it would be better inside the paywall. Or am I missing something? My guess is I’m getting lots of exposure, but so far, no one has taken the bait to sign up to Medium with my invitation.

I enjoy writing on Medium. It is the best place to write. I have a Word Press website but write very little there. Why? Because Medium puts our stories out to the masses. I want to improve, and you are the ones to help me. Thank you.

This story had four thousand seven hundred views.

This story had three three thousand eight hundred views.

Thank you for reading to the end, it doesn’t always happen, but when it does, it makes me happy.
