How Can You Make Your Articles Stand Out?
Just a few tweaks make all the difference
What can you do to set yourself apart from the crowd?
Tag past articles in your new ones
Linking past articles into current ones will drive traffic to older articles that may not be ranking as highly.
This keeps articles from becoming stagnant, and obviously, it’ll help make you more money.
I haven’t been actively doing this for very long, but I’ve seen a big jump in my stats for older articles since I started the method.
You can add a few at the bottom, even. Like this:
“If you liked this article, you might like these as well”…
It’s an easy way of advertising your own work.
Have you ever been innocently scrolling through youtube, and then you get sucked into a creator's personal wormhole? Four hours later I’ve watched thirty videos by some random girl, all from previews that come up on the side of the screen.
Utilize the short attention span of your readers. Give them something to jump to next, something that is yours.
You’ll make more money.
Pinterest was huge back in 2013, but I didn’t know it was still booming the way it is.
Hop on the site and make a free business profile. Link your Medium account to the URL request box, and then share your posts from medium onto Pinterest.
If you’re a health blogger, and someone is on Pinterest looking up ‘5 Green Smoothie Recipes’, and you have a blog with that title, they’re coming to your article.
Make sure you’re in the referral program because if they get sucked into the Medium wormhole, they'll want to sign up and more than likely they’ll do it using your link.
Use Twitter to your advantage
Similar to Pinterest, share all of your posts on Twitter.
Gain a following, and tag Medium and Medium Creators. You’ll come up in Twitter search results and rank in the list of Medium writers on Twitter.
You can share to other social networking sites, too, I just tend to stick with those two.
Research SEO and learn to use it
Being able to reach your target audience, outside of Medium, is a big deal. This is how people will find your work, and potentially sign up with your referral link.
Figure out how to optimize your search engine results to bring the most traffic to your page.
There are dozens of articles further detailing how to do this.
I’m no pro at SEO, and I don’t want to give you half-assed advice, I recommend finding a credible online source and researching the best methods.
I’m still learning, and there’s a lot going on that you need to know.
Use more than just the Unsplash photo tool
There are dozens of other royalty-free sites you can find solid images on.
Shutterstock, Pexels, Picography are just a few you can use for free.
Branch out beyond what Medium offers.
Also, don’t be afraid to use GIFs and photos from relevant media, like TV shows or movies. Unsplash can definitely become dull after a while.
If you’re comfortable, you can even use some of your own personal photos.
There are a lot of things you can do to make your articles stand out. If most people make less than $100 on Medium, and you’re writing as they do, you’re going to find yourself making less than $100, too.
Do more, be more.
