How Astrology Can Help You

Why Using Astrology Every Day Will Help You Master Interpersonal Communication

Ever heard the phrase “Once in a Blue Moon”, which means that something happens rarely? Well, I decided to write this post today because on October 31st, 2020, there will be a Blue Moon, Mercury in retrograde and a few other alignments that make for a truely spooky Halloween. I can’t stress enough, also with the U.S. election so close to this disasterous date for communication, that things will not go our way! Confusion and miscommunication will be our enemies. Read on about why astology is so helpful for navigating our daily life, especially as times will be getting trickier.

The Stigma.

Most people are familiar with Astrology. Nowadays, there are plenty of apps and websites that give you a free daily horoscope. Yet, even the most well-trusted astrologers say that trusting a daily horoscope isn’t always the best astrological tool.

Sure, most of these horoscopes have generalized guidance that anyone can relate to. Furthermore, these horoscopes are an interpretation of an interpretation of an interpretation of a star chart that was mathematically calculated.

So the question becomes, why would anyone trust astrology when the most common example of the ideology in western society is through Daily Horoscopes?

Astrology at its core.

Let’s take a look back at the basics. One of my favorite books on astrology that is great for beginners is called “The Secret Language of Astrology” by Roy Gillet. In his book, Gillet illustrates all factors that play into understanding astrology, including its 352,020-year-old history and ties all over the world, clear and easy to read descriptions of the planets, signs, and houses, and further resources to interpret your birth chart— also known as natal chart.

I highly encourage you to check out this book if you need further understanding of how astrology works.

To put it plainly, Astrology has been used all over the world for thousands of years. In the western world, astrology lost traction with the dawn of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Yet, Shakespeare in the late 17th century still wrote about the stars within a Christian mindset. Not to mention, places like India still use astrology in everyday life, the same way they did hundreds of years before.

It is telling that astrology has survived for so long. Therefore, why do we, as a society, constantly discredit its usefulness in our everyday, modern lives?

Why do I need astrology in my life?

I once had a friend who told me that the reason she loves astrology is that it uses probability and logic to identify the emotional characteristics of every individual based on their birth. By understanding these characteristics in others and ourselves, we can communicate with each other more clearly.

I will take this statement even further, by including that it is important to also understand where the planets are daily to understand how they affect our own emotions in tandem with those around us, as well as how we can better understand what leads to certain events taking place.

For example, Susan Miller (Author of AstrologyZone) talked about how the patterns of the planets charted this year facilitated the decisions that led to the U.S. handle of the Pandemic. She even mentioned back in April 2020, that this whole year would be bad for weddings. This connection to the coronavirus makes sense, of course, as people in most areas of the United States do not want to gather in large groups.

No one, not even Miller herself, would declare her a fortune teller. But astrologers do something that not all of us average folk are thoughtful and patient enough to do. They make predictions off of observation.

Astrologers sit down and do the work we are to busy to do; They ponder about how and why our world works the way it does, and they come up with advice as to how people with different personalities (specifically, different astrological signs) should navigate through current events and interpersonal communications.

“Astrology is Nonsense”

Many people “debunk” astrology by stating that descriptions for horoscopes, or even natal-chart-generating websites, include language that is so general anyone can relate to it.

I don’t understand how this concept equals “Astrology is Fake”. Astrology — especially when presented through birth charts — is meant to help you understand your full, complex personality, and the probability of how you live your life with this unique personality. Of course it includes generalizations and paradoxes! To be a full-human, you have to understand the light and the dark within you. Everybody is complex.

Therefore, to use and interpret your chart is to be mindful.

Mindfulness and Astrology Go Hand-in-Hand

The reason why astrology is so helpful in interpersonal communication is that it creates a window of opportunity for you to observe someone else’s behaviors and emotional responses through a new lens.

Using someone’s astrological sign as a filter with which to see their truth and using it to further recognize your own behavior, will allow you to communicate with them more effectively.

For example, my friend, a Taurus, often finds she can be really judgmental towards people who switch their opinions, seemingly without reason. In this predicament, she often gets angry. Taurus’s are often known for their fiery temper and fierce passion for justice.

Therefore, if my friend meets someone who is an Aries — a sign known for flip-flopping their alliances — she can be mindful that her personality, and this person who is an Aries, may have fundamental differences. Thus, when the Taurus gets upset, she can be tactful in the way she responds to the Aries and understand that this is simply who the Aries is.

Conclusion

I read my horoscope every month by Susan Miller and wake up every morning to read my “phrase of the day” on my Co-Star app.

This is how I remain mindful of how I will communicate throughout my day; This is how I will react to my struggles and mistakes throughout the day, how I will handle my routine, and how I will interpret my miscommunications with co-workers and family.

Some people read an inspirational quote for the day. Some may keep a gratitude journal that they write in every morning. Some may read their daily horoscope. All of us look for guidance throughout our day in order to predict the unexpected.

I believe in using your resources — perhaps tools like astrology— to navigate this unpredictable life we live. There is nothing wrong with igniting a passion for more mindfulness, better communication, and more humility for understanding those we come in contact with throughout the day.
