How Are Indie Musicians Dealing with the Coronavirus? Part 3

A Conversation with Rapper Alex King

COVID-19 health pandemic has affected the world. Everyone is suffering. But what about the people who create the music you listen to every day? In this series, I interview independent artists in different genres, asking them how the Coronavirus has changed how they create music and how it is affected. In my third interview, I talk to rising rap artist Alex King. Be sure to check out his music!

First off, how’s your mental health? What are some things you do to keep creative during this health pandemic?

AK: At this moment, I’m in a state of shock, really. I could have never pictured this in my lifetime. So I’ve been staying busy with making new music, getting back to producing and writing. One thing I can find positive out of this has been more time to focus on my passion.

Have you seen a change in the way you interact with other musicians on your projects?

AK: Yes, I have a lot of intelligent people who I continue you to learn from, and they always say, “you have to collaborate with other producers and artists to further your reach.” The more you collaborate with other artists on an independent level, the more listeners and potential fans your music will be in front of.

How do you view the role of supporting the community in sustaining/supporting the arts?

AK: I feel not only as artists, but as one human to another human, we have to find the empathy within ourselves to want the next person to be happy and live a fulfilled, healthy life. So as artists, in my opinion, we must push this conversation forward for the betterment of mankind.

What are some ways you have been thinking outside the box to reach fans with your music?

AK: Right now, as an artist outside of ads, I’m concentrating on playlists, collaborations, and, most importantly, my family. Sometimes we overlook a network that’s already established, our family. Word of mouth has all ways been a useful marketing tool.

Any new projects or music that your fans can check out now?

AK: Yes, I have 2 new songs out on all major platforms now. “For Your Love” and a song called “Now”.

I’m currently working on a 7 song EP that will feature some new music plus some remixes. That will be available later this month on all major platforms. I’m excited about the future.
