How and What to Write When Struggling With Depression
My mother said to me, “Just Write It All Out!” so that you’re progressing and productive!” as she caressed my forehead, with a smile on her face.
Thus I thought it best to write it all out, well to be fair; I want to write about how to write and what to write when you’re struggling with depression.
It takes some motivation, perhaps that I just received from this beloved lady, who cares for me unconditionally. Yes, I’m motivated as my body and soul are filled with warmth and giddy joy, as I’m grinning on the fact that I’m able to write a few words for everyone who goes through these awful times.
I have lost some people this year, that were very close to me and to whom I was very close with too. There have been instances where my patience and faith have been tested, and thus life does usher depressing moments when one goes through these struggles alone, perhaps.
One thing I believe gives me the ability to write about myself are probably 3 daily practices I usually do, to write myself off of this depressing and draining feeling.
I know, I know, perhaps you might think, “Oh no, another list of things that aren’t gonna work for you!” perhaps, “they will or they won’t” but these are just the things that give me energy, and thus I thought to write a piece of advice that comes from my effective experience that would supplement another cause, from the deepest etchings of my calm soul.
1. A Walk after I wake up — then a bath afterward
Two things essential for having a healthy lifestyle, I know what you might say how do you go for a walk when you just barely woke up. Well I know, it can be a very tough task — getting out from bed, I literally struggle from it every day.
But I do get up eventually, you must know that you have to otherwise, you would just sleep in the entire day, perhaps wake up in the night afterward. Going for a walk is an exercise for your body, and works your muscles around from all laying down all day. Having a bath afterward maintains healthy hygiene and keeps you fresh and clean.
“Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water-bath is to the body.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes
Two things I definitely enjoy, perhaps if you want something to accompany you during these two activities, I’d suggest listening to these two artists, while you’re at it.
- HAUSER’s Relaxing Cello — you will definitely enjoy listening to his work
- CLANN-SEELIE Album — Both of these are good for a walk, and a bath, relaxing!
I think doing this will definitely relax your mind, and body helping you in focusing on different ideas that draft newer concepts to be etched in your soul, and moreover through your hands in fine paper. Music will help with your depression, the right set can always motivate one person to feel his feelings as they write their thoughts away just like that.
2. Eat Something Fresh — A Fruit Salad Perhaps
Something funny happened to me today, I was taking a bath while suddenly I heard a knock near my windowpane, as my door is mostly locked out of safety perhaps, don’t want anybody accidentally waltzing in when I’m in my birthday suit, right!
After I came outside, What I saw was a bowl of fruit salad, the scent was so attractive. It seemed so delicious, my mouth was watering. I came to check outside, it was perhaps my Aunt, slowly leaving like a cat burglar but one who delivers fruit salad bowls, to depressive children.
When I came near, the window, I startled her, by saying “Boo!” and then she said I left something for you, I hope you feel better.
Awww, Isn’t she sweet! I usually eat fruits when I’m depressed, so I was enthralled that I was going to eat a bowl of fruit salad by myself, reading medium stories, as I chomped down on freshness. This filled my appetite and moreover gave me a sense of mood adjustment. Fruits do that for you, they help you to refresh your mood.
I got the energy I needed to write, and thus I opened my draft and started to draft ideas to write, that perhaps are still in the drafting phase.
And I’m Here!
3. Communicate with Others — Spend Time with friends and family
In times, of COVID-19, it is harder to get in touch with others, to sit with your loved ones — perhaps they are far away, and you can’t get in touch.
I know the feeling, trust me, I do understand the frustration, but look at the bright side, you got something in your hands! It’s a phone, we are in the digital era, where everyone is just a call away. So just pick up that phone and call someone, and the minutes will disappear as hours, as you spend your time with your friends and family on call.
Even if you are rooms apart, in times of social distancing, Whatsapp is on your phone and you can call your friends and family! 😆 I know it’s funny, well you gotta stick by the rules. Ain’t it! Plus you will make some fantastic memories.
Can you beat my record of Voice Call! It’s about 28 hours long, on Whatsapp!
The average time I usually spend with my peers even when I’m depressed is 8 hours a day. And I am in contact with many people at once, I’m just too felicitous to be a part of them as they are for me. We keep each other together and in sync with questions, and answers — emotions and fears we bear it all together with one another.
You can do that too if you don’t have anyone — I believe there are apps for that like Wakie and Ablo. And if you’re interested in writing and making pen-ships — friendship and penpals; well, you could install Slowly.
All these magnificent apps will help you in gaining a friend or two that will definitely stay, with you as long as you require, or need.
By talking with others and listening to them, you can replenish the social hourglass of your soul, thus filling it with ideas, views, and perspectives that you can ink towards your writing as pieces that will inspire and aspire others to do as well.
But there is an exceptional option too, you can talk on medium too with another, By adding a private note and starting a conversation and exchanging ideas and perspectives — heartfelt emotions perhaps together, there is a universe of opportunities for you when you do this.
It not only helps you gain a friend but also fills the void that is yearning to consume the warmth that is ready to be mined when you start writing that note.
Just Do It! and Remember it will blow your mind!
Thus, I did just all that with such a simple way of doing things, and yet my playlist hasn’t finished. Wow, that’s actually something! isn’t it!
I write memos on my phone, and on paper that I usually stick on the wall, as ideas should be plastered where ever you see fit as somebody is going to pick them up, even if you don’t.
I’m sure you will be able to draft some exciting ideas while doing all these mentioned, even if you’re dealing with something — a good brainstorming, music and good food can always fix your problems with a clear conscious.
If you have other exciting choices that you choose to help you write, do let me know in the comments so that everyone can benefit themselves, during this time.
Stay Blessed and Stay Safe!
