AirPods have evolved from an internet meme to a widely popular and essential wireless headphone product due to celebrity influence, societal perceptions of wealth and status, and their genuine convenience and user-friendly features.

Abstract

The article discusses the transformation of Apple's AirPods from a subject of online ridicule to a must-have accessory. Initially met with skepticism for their one-size-fits-all design and the loss risk, AirPods gained traction through high-profile celebrity endorsements, becoming a status symbol associated with wealth and exclusivity. Despite not being the most expensive option, the Apple brand's association with luxury and the high cost of other Apple products like iPhones and iMacs contributed to their desirability. The practical benefits of AirPods, such as easy pairing with iPhones, automatic pausing of audio when removed from the ear, and a charging case, further solidified their popularity. The introduction of the more advanced AirPods Pro in 2019 suggests that their market presence will continue to grow.

How AirPods Went From Being Internet Mockery to a Popular Essential

How the tables have turned.

When it comes to all of the modern tech products of the last few years, it is without a doubt that Apple’s AirPods have taken a complete turnaround. AirPods went from being a repeated meme across the internet, to becoming one of the most popular headphones of today.

The first generation of AirPods were released on December 13, 2016 a couple of months after the release of the Apple iPhone 7. This particular iPhone model raised a lot of eyebrows, as it was the first iPhone to no longer have a traditional headphone jack. While this phone came with special headphones that plug into the charging port, and a “dongle” adapter to fit traditional headphones, it wasn’t an ideal design for many. Mainly because, users that had an iPhone 7 were no longer able to charge their phone while having headphones plugged in.

However, Apple was soon able to solve this inconvenience a few months later when the AirPods came out, and it only costed $159.00 to fix it.

Many people at the release were immediately skeptical at these headphones. These were wireless headphones that came in one shape and size and had no physical way of both pieces staying attached together. These headphones seemed like a recipe for disaster, where they would start cluttering the streets of cities like a single sock you lost while doing your laundry.

Yet somehow, over the course of a few years, Apple AirPods are now some of the most popular wireless headphones to date. But why is this the case?

Celebrity Influence

Some of the most iconic celebrities of all time have started wearing AirPods more recently. Celebrities such as Diana Ross and Kristin Stewart have been seen wearing AirPods prior to them becoming popular.

This form of influence isn’t anything new. When celebrities are seen with a product, it’s more likely people are going to start getting that product. This could either be because the younger demographic want to have the same things their role models have. On the other hand, it can easily influence people due to implementing the mindset of “they have AirPods, so they must be good”.

As more and more public figures started acquiring AirPods, they became more “relevant” to society. Therefore, AirPods became more and more popular for the masses.

The Stigma That Comes with AirPods

As time progressed, many people on social started to make memes that are based on AirPods. Many of these memes are centered around how the wealthiest people owned and used AirPods.

Despite the fact that AirPods have never been the most expensive headphones, they come from Apple. Apple has the image of creating sleek and long lasting products, but at a high cost. The average cost of an iPhone is $758 and the average cost of an iMac is $1299. Needless to say, investing in one of Apple’s devices costs a pretty penny.

Although their devices are expensive, this somehow attracts people to their products more. Even though it sounds shallow, people are attracted to owning more expensive materials, as it makes them look more important or appealing. And since Apple is on the fence of being a luxury brand, more people are going to want their products.

The Actual Convenience

As soon as the momentum of AirPods began picking up, users were starting to realize the easy setup and convenience of AirPods.

If you were connecting your AirPods to an iPhone, a notification pops up on your phone screen and will continue to automatically connect from now on. Also, AirPods have other small features that make listening to headphones user-friendly. For example, the headphones are stored in a magnetic case that charges the headphones while they are stored. In addition, when someone takes out one of the two headphones, the music, podcast, or video you’re listening to will pause. And then, play again when it is put back in your ear.

Once more and more people started incorporating the AirPods into their every day life, it was easy to see the convenience of them. From this point onward, AirPods were no longer put on a pedestal and were now in the demographic of being mid-priced, good quality wireless headphones.

AirPods have come a long way in just the span of a couples years. But since an improved “pro” set of AirPods were released in the fall of 2019, these headphones will not be coming off of the shelves anytime soon.
