We all know that college admissions and scholarship applications are highly competitive. COVID delayed studying for so many students that competition this year is higher than ever. There are now fewer scholarships and seats to go around for the increased number of applicants in 2022/23.
But did you know that your child is not only competing against other students, but also against AI essay writers for the top spots at college?
In this article I’ll explain how college applicants are using next-gen content creation AI writing software to gain admission (and grab scholarships) at top colleges and institutions. I’ll also teach you how you can level the playing field for the students in your family, and secure their future.

How does Essay Writing Software Work?
We’ve long been using computer science and technology to improve essay writing. Technically, Grammarly is an AI tool that corrects grammatical errors and improves word choice. One study found that successful college application essays to Harvard and Yale received a 98% overall score on Grammarly, whereas those at 88% were more likely to land in the NO pile.
So using AI tools is not new, and it isn’t something we even blink about (though our grandparents might be shocked that nobody goes to the trouble to look up words in the dictionary anymore!)
But spellcheck and Grammarly are already old technology. Now a computer program is writing the entire essay. We’re in a post-chore age, where writing should be lightning fast.
The increase in college applications written with AI
With recent advances in artificial intelligence, neural networks, and machine learning, we’re seeing large-scale AI content creation of long-form content. Simply put, the future of writing is to have an AI coauthor to augment your written words.
This innovation started with marketing copy and advertising, but this technology is entering the education sector. I wrote an article previously about how students can write essays in just a few clicks and speed up their writing process significantly. The AI answers essay questions easily, especially with a little input, and can summarize a complete article:
What I hadn’t expected was the huge demand for the AI-generated college admission essay. But I’ve noticed a rising trend. A large portion of the inquiries on my website — where I offer an AI writing software training program for marketing professionals and others interested in learning more about these new tools — are now from parents on behalf of students.
College admissions and graduate essays even exceed my real estate clients. Clearly, students are getting on board with AI faster than the rest of us.
Machine learning technology and college essay writing
It may seem like the technology of the future, but GPT-3 based AI tools — like Jasper AI — deploy next-gen Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning to assist humans, whether that’s to write a blog post, marketing campaign, research article, or an entire essay from just a few words of input. Wired Magazine even went so far as to say that in a few years, most of what we read online will be written with the assistance of these AI tools.
Not only does this save time, but AI software uses training data from some of the most compelling content and is trained on marketing techniques. Of course, this feature of AI can be used to influence college admissions committees.
You’re trying to convince the reader to select you from the thousands of other applicants. Let’s face it: a personal essay is in many ways advertising: you’re marketing your best attributes and achievements.
So consider a professional AI writing assistant to increase your appeal.
Not only is it now commonplace, but it’s almost required to gain an edge over the competition. You wouldn’t shun using Grammarly or SpellCheck. So why not use an AI essay writer? Everyone is pulling out all the stops to gain those top spots, and it might be the added boost your student needs.

“Can College Admissions Committees tell if a College Essay is AI-Generated?”
Not if it’s done well. One of my specialties is training students to get the AI to match their tone of voice from a few essays, or anything they’ve written. It only needs about a page or less. Jasper AI can use this data to improve the student’s writing, while also helping the AI output sound less “robotic”.
It brings the human element back in and makes sure the writing is in their words. It’s also very easy to do.
“What about plagarism?”
Another issue is plagiarism. Thankfully, Jasper AI content is 99% original and free of plagiarism. That 1% is human error and can be avoided with the right training. Jasper AI also includes an inbuilt plagiarism checker that costs cents an essay; well worth using if you have any concerns.
Getting the best results from your AI writing assistant
The real key to good results is using good input and relevant content. Jasper can understand context, so the quality of input you give Jasper will improve the output. While you can get good results even with one sentence of input (in my own research, I’ve found 22 words are enough to get a full, human-sounding, and compelling admissions essay), the AI doesn’t do all the work. The student will still need to fact-check the result and do the final editing.
So your student is still the central focus and highly involved in the writing process. To my mind, that isn’t cheating, but a smarter use of their effort.
Basically, we’re using the AI writing tool to speed up and improve their essay-writing skills. (Which is what I do myself, as an adult with aphasia).
You can also reuse the same input to get more essays. That’s the benefit of writing with an AI: you can batch your essays. Think of it like cooking: you wouldn’t bake muffins one at a time; you’d make a dozen. Same thing here.
With artificial intelligence, you can produce a perfect batch of college application essays to send to different institutions with no extra effort.
Each is original and unique and can be tailored to different essay questions easily. All you need is that core input, and you can get multiple results.
From one good paragraph, college applicants could write and submit 100 different essays. This is a huge boon when applying for scholarships en masse while still producing high-quality writing.
Reasons to use an AI writing assistant for College Essays
- Saves time, increases and improves output
- Students can easily write 10–20 essays a week
- Scholarship applications are a numbers game
- Write more, submit more, increase the odds
- Leverage the inbuilt marketing techniques in the neural network
- Put their hard-won achievements into words more proficiently
Why should I use AI content generation software instead of hiring a freelance human to write a college application essay?
There are hundreds of websites out there (including Fivver and Freelancer) that offer to write college essays for students. It’s a tempting but very bad idea, as many of their writers don’t have natural English language skills.
The stilted English of these operators is a dead giveaway that the student hired contract essay writers online. They don’t sound like the student.
Additionally, they’re prone to committing plagiarism. For all these reasons, often the outsourced human-written essay goes right into the rejected pile!
Alternatively, there are high-level firms that offer to write your essay as part of college planning. They’re of a much better quality, and if you can afford an advisor, you should engage their services. But I’ll let you in on a little secret: many of these will still use artificial intelligence to write your student’s admissions essay. How do I know? Because I trained their staff.
Ask your planning service if their writers are based offshore or — preferably — if they use AI essay writers. There’s nothing wrong with that idea, and if anything it should be an added feature, given the benefits of technology.
But if you want to cut out the middleman and the thousands of dollars they charge, you can just get a monthly subscription to an AI writer. The link below gives you 5 Days free to try out the Jasper AI software, and 10,000 credits to use (credits are used to pay for how many words you generate).
If your student finds using the AI assistant beneficial, you might want to continue with Jasper AI for the essays they have to write as assessments throughout their college degree. It can improve their study/life balance and help them focus on deep learning, instead of stressing over writing essays.
Getting started: How do I write essays with artificial intelligence?
The Jasper AI Bootcamp is a good place for a general introduction. But if you want to cut through all the extraneous ‘stuff’ (designed for professional copywriters and marketers), and get right to all the insights to get up and running with writing college app essays, you can book me for a session.
I offer a 50% discount if you sign up for the Jasper AI trial using my link.
In your session, I’ll show you how to set Jasper to a tone of voice that suits your student, and walk them through the entire process of AI essay writing.
At the end of the 50 minutes, they’ll have their first essay and all the tools they need to continue writing essays on their own! I’m also on hand if you need a follow-up appointment or to run more essays through the AI writer.
I also have Recipes available especially for scholarship applicants.
What is a Jasper AI recipe?
A recipe is like a flowchart or a worksheet to go through. It gives you all the steps that students — and the AI writer — need to complete a task. It’s called a recipe because, like in baking, it’s a proven method for repeated success. (Remember the muffin batch we mentioned earlier?)
I currently have 10 recipes that cover some of the ten top scholarship essay question themes (“leadership”, “community service”, and “career goals”).
I’ve also written a handbook that goes along with them. It’s incorporated into the recipe, so in effect, it’s a workbook where you plug in some key facts/personal experience, and with a little editing end up with an essay.
I sell these for $20, or you can have the entire set of 10 for $180. If your student has a particularly difficult question to address, I can write a personalized recipe, however, there is a charge for the service ($75).

Today’s take-home advice
Whether you decide to use new essay-writing tools or stick with the old-fashioned program, you’re doing the right thing by doing the research.
Hopefully, this article has helped show you how students are utilizing content-generation software to get their words out faster. College has definitely changed since we went there in the 90s and early 2000s! But like the computer and the typewriter before it, new technologies continue to shape the future of education and the opportunities that students have.
Make sure you’re giving them every advantage to make the most of it!
