How A Simple Walking App Stopped Me From Being A Complete Loser.

This is the story of how an app on my phone changed my life. No, seriously. I was a mess before I started using the app, but after a few days of walking every day, I felt like a new person. So if you’re looking for a way to improve your life, read on — because a walking app might just be what you need.

Using the walking app taught me a very valuable lesson:

If you’re going to do something, go all in or don’t bother doing it at all.

If it’s important to you, commit 100% or walk away.

Let me ask you something, if you went to a dentist would you want him to be 100% focused on fixing your teeth? Or would it be ok if he was just 50% committed to doing a good job?

I’m pretty sure you would say Yes! He must be committed and laser focused.

Have you ever noticed how we demand clarity, commitment & laser focus from others, but not from ourselves?

Using a simple walking app taught me a very valuable lesson about commitment and I’m truly the better for it.

The Challenge

I enrolled in a 28 day fat burning challenge and set myself a simple daily walking target. Because I have a Masters in being busy but not productive, I decided it would be ok if I multitasked & combined the walking challenge with my trip to the shops. I figured it couldn’t really make that much difference if I killed two birds with one stone.

I didn’t know just how wrong I was and how much of a difference it could make until I decided to get better organised. Being chronically busy is not only overwhelming, it’s also extremely bad for your health. Trello boards helped me organise my time and projects better, which gave me time to dedicate just to walking.

The Discovery

On day 13 of the challenge, I took my first planned walk. The result: I was gobsmacked. I felt gutted that I hadn’t been fully invested for the previous 13 days. I had robbed myself of truly being present in the moment, enjoying the challenge and feeling the joys & benefits of walking out in the fresh air.

Fast forward to day 22 and by this time I’m really noticing the difference and giving my all to the walking challenge. My attitude has changed and I realise with great sadness that by failing to fully commit to things and opportunities, I have been missing out big time.

Lessons Learnt

I’ve heard many gurus say that if you want to succeed you need to go all in. Until now I never truly understood what they meant by it. If I was to go back in time here’s what I would do:

-Get organised: Use a productivity tool like Trello. It’s super easy and gives you a visual way to create a very flexible to do list.

-Schedule times for all your activities.

-Be fully focused on each activity and don’t multitask.

In this way you can start to increase your connection to the present moment and stop worrying about all the future jobs you have to do. When you are focused you are committed and when you are committed great things can happen.
