TRAVEL AND RELATIONSHIPS
How a Short Getaway Rekindled Our Relationship
A spur of the moment adventure in my hometown

We had been trying to plan a weekend getaway for ages, but our unforgiving schedules meant that we kept postponing our travel plans. We are a family that travels often — the inability to do so meant that we were itching for it.
Getting caught up in everyday busy routines is natural for most couples, especially if you have kids. I was juggling a full-time job with school — and my wife’s work as a structural engineer was keeping her hands full.
The hectic routine was impacting our relationship, and we badly needed an outlet.
Embracing the Spark of Spontaneity
As luck would have it, one of my classes got canceled, and I got home early. Finding my wife’s car in the driveway was the second pleasant surprise of the day.
She had taken an early lunch break and did not have to be back in the office for another two hours.
Embracing the spark of spontaneity and grabbing each fleeting opportunity has always been the hallmark of our relationship. We decided that we were going to make these two hours count.
The month of September in Newport, Rhode Island is the perfect sweet spot between the summer and winter seasons. If the weather Gods are happy and the sun is shining, it’s a great time to be outdoors.

Tourists in Our Own Town
We decided to become tourists in our own town and headed for the most sought-after tourist destination in Newport — the Cliff Walk!
We packed a sandwich and hopped into my car, brimming with excitement in anticipation of our impromptu mini-adventure.
The Cliff Walk can be physically challenging and takes time if you are planning on doing the whole trek. Since we had precious little time, we decided to use the Ochre Court entrance to the Cliff Walk.
It gave us a nice spread of easy walking on the North-South axis in the vicinity of the vantage point at Forty Steps to sit and relax.
I was ready to find a sanctuary in our impromptu escape that had literally cost us nothing. We had almost the entire oceanfront to ourselves as few people had ventured out on a Wednesday morning.
Thankfully there was a friendly couple around who assisted us in our mandatory photo-op. My wife thinks I messed up the photo badly — I will let you be the judge!

Cultivating Harmony Through Communication
We climbed the Forty Steps, settled atop the elevated vantage point, and stared at the deep ocean. That day we only had a few seagulls to keep us company. Even the sailboats, omnipresent around our town, did not make an appearance, thus providing us with an ideal moment of complete solitude.
As we sat there and began to talk about random stuff, I felt that we were getting back the one thing I was missing from our relationship, the ability to communicate without worrying about kids or our schedules.
Our conversation was only punctuated by a curious seagull that kept eavesdropping — but we didn’t mind.
A combination of the warm sunshine and the cool ocean breeze had momentarily created the perfect balance — something that was missing in our relationship.
Noticing the Little Things
We sat and chatted smiling at each other — sparkling like two lovers who don’t have a care in the world. We also took stock of our background. I had driven past the Salve Regina campus multiple times without realizing that it had a beautiful grassy lawn leading up to the oceanfront.

Serenity helps you notice and appreciate the little things.
We got up and sat on a bench with our backs to the ocean this time. We continued to chatter but this slight change in our vantage point brought a nice shift to our conversation as well.
That day we created a short but sweet moment to remember. Our short retreat together stands testament that we must continue to be spontaneous in our relationship.
When we do not find time or resources to do the fancy romantic stuff — the simple experiences come to our rescue. This short and sweet adventure rekindled our relationship and reminded us to always make time for each other during our busy schedules.
