A few weeks ago, I was at a birthday party. I had fun, drank a little alcohol, and ended up coming back home at 4 o’clock. Unfortunately, I had to get up quite early the next morning. I only slept about 3 hours.
From the afternoon on I felt incredibly bad and thought to myself that it must have been due to my lack of sleep.
Out of curiosity, I researched what the consequences of sleep deprivation are. I always knew that getting enough sleep was important, but I was surprised at how bad the consequences of sleep deprivation can actually be, especially when it becomes chronic. This article will explain why you should make sleep a priority.
A Lack Of Sleep Increases The Risk Of Illness
Insufficient sleep, just like poor sleep quality, leads to an increased susceptibility to disease, as the immune system loses efficiency. The risk is particularly high for sleep-deprived individuals who are surrounded by other people a lot.
The following health consequences can be observed in people who regularly sleep too little:
- More inflammations in the body
- The risk of heart disease and depression increases
- Increased headaches
- Increased deposits of calcium and cholesterol in the blood vessels
Sleep Deprivation Makes You Fat
During your sleep, your body continues to burn calories diligently to maintain the functions that are essential for survival. If you sleep enough, you automatically give your body a long time without food, during which fat can be burned.
A lack of sleep favors strong fluctuations in blood sugar levels, which often leads to ravenous appetite attacks.
In addition, lack of sleep has a negative effect on hormones. During sleep, the hormone leptin is increasingly released, which inhibits the feeling of hunger. After waking up, the hormone grehlin is increasingly released, which causes hunger to arise.
Concentration Deficits Due To Lack Of Sleep
Sleep deprivation has a similar effect to alcohol. Those who sleep too little feel similar effects as if they were drunk.
This is noticeable, for example, in the fact that one can concentrate less, becomes forgetful, and is easily distracted. In addition, the ability to react decreases. The reason for this is the increased release of the neurotransmitter adenosine.
Too Little Sleep Makes You Stupid
During deep sleep, our brain reorganizes itself, so to speak. We process experiences and emotions. In addition, learned things, such as knowledge or motor skills, are stored.
If the phase of deep sleep is too short, this cannot happen fully, so as a consequence there is less mental development. Brain performance declines over time.
Sexual Dysfunction
Sleep deprivation can also have negative effects on our sexuality. Women may experience cycle disturbances or a lack of ovulation. In men, the speed of the sperm decreases, as does testosterone production, which also has negative health effects.
In addition, reduced sexual desire due to insufficient sleep can often be observed.
