A Haunted Restaurant in Thailand

Go There For The Food, Return There For The Ghost

Inside a massive multi-level mall somewhere deep in Bangkok, my wife and I stumbled upon what I now believe to be a haunted restaurant.

I ordered the Green Curry as a main course and she ordered the Red Curry. Both came with rice, naturally. Our waiter also brought us a very small ceramic tray, with two types of hot sauce.

Waiters, in this restaurant, didn’t stop for small talk. They were constantly on the move. Ours seemed to be nice enough, though he didn’t speak very much English.

He quickly covered our empty table with several dishes of beautiful looking food, all piping hot, and then he floated off to serve other customers. He came back a few minutes later with our drink refills. And then he left again. Such a busy guy.

It was at that point that I noticed something very strange. The ceramic tray was moving. On its own.

It was inching its way towards me — almost gliding. Then it stopped, turned left, and went back towards my wife. It then did a very deliberate zig zag, and then it turned back again towards me.

“Karen! Look! Karen!” I said, pointing my finger at it.

She was as stunned as me.

The tray made its way back to my side of the table, in a curving path, stopping and starting a few times, before coming right up to the table’s edge.

We sat there for a few seconds, staring at it. I slowly reached my hand out to pick it up. I lifted it up, and felt the bottom to see if it was slippery. I ran my palm across the tabletop to see if it was wet. I put my foot on the base of the table to see if it was wobbly.

“What the heck just happened?” I said to her.

“I have no idea — that was so weird” She replied.

Just then I noticed that our waiter had come to a halt at our table, and was watching us closely, as we were staring at the ceramic tray.

“You OK?”, he said with what seemed like a nervous smile.

“Our hot sauce was moving around the table” I said, expecting him to explain.

“Pardon?”, he replied.

“On its own”, I clarified.

“Pardon?, he said again.

“Uh, nothing — no — everything is good. Thank you!”

He moved on. We started laughing, because we must have looked like fools. We began to eat, and the meal was amazing. And we whispered to each other, while we ate, sharing possibilities about how something like that could happen.

The next day, we decided to come back to the restaurant, to see if it would happen again. Same table, same waiter, same orders. But this time, nothing happened.

Later, we questioned our memories. We laughed and discussed it some more. Did we really see what we thought we saw? That’s how our brains work, I suppose.

It was our honeymoon. And even if nobody else believed it, we knew that we shared that experience together — one of so many interesting things that we’ve shared on this journey together in life.
