How a Compassionate Husband Sneaked the Family Dog into the Hospital To Say Goodbye to His Dying Wife

The dog comforted the dying wife in her final moments

I rarely weep when I share kindness stories, but this one made me shed tears.

Tears welled up in my eyes when I first read the story. Writing the story has been cathartic.

Hospitals are most inhospitable to dying patients, emotionally and spiritually. They are cold and impersonal to the extent, sometimes, the dying patients and their loved ones cannot share a last moment of togetherness.

We know how dogs can provide comfort and support when we are distressed. In a hospital, there is no such as the human element. They do not allow pet dogs inside, even if a dying patient wants to see their dog for one last time.

Here’s an incredible and a heartwarming story of how a loving husband circumvented the insane rule and sneaked the family dog into his dying wife’s room.

Mel shared this story on reddit.com.

Mel’s wife had a major surgery. Her condition worsened after the surgery. It became clear she was not going to recover. She was fed through a tube and experienced severe pain. She could barely speak.

One day, she managed to tell Mel she wanted to see their family dog, a fifty-pound Austrian shepherd, ‘one last time.’ Mel decided to fulfil his dying wife’s request.

How Mel sneaked the family dog into his wife’s hospital room

Mel had a ‘conversation’ with their family dog and told her what he was going to do. The dog seemed to understand Mel’s intention.

Mel gently placed the dog in an unzipped suitcase and drove to the hospital. When they stopped at the parking lot, Mel told the dog to keep quiet as he zipped the suitcase and carried her inside. He said,

“When we arrived, I ‘explained’ to her that I would open the zipper in a few minutes and that she could see her Mommy.”

The dog remained quiet when Mel carried the suitcase inside. He told the nurses that the suitcase contained “items to make my wife more comfortable.”

Mel’s wife was asleep when they entered her room. When Mel unzipped the suitcase, the dog immediately jumped onto the bed and lay on his wife’s chest quietly, looking at her eyes. The dog took care not to mess with the wires and tubes attached to Mel’s wife.

After about twenty minutes, Mel’s wife woke up and moaned in pain. The dog began licking Mel’s wife and moaned softly. The dog did not bark.

Mel explained the situation:

“My wife hugged her for almost an hour, smiling the whole time. We were busted by one nurse who was so touched that she promised not to tell. When my wife finally went back to sleep, I loaded the dog back in the suitcase, and she somewhat sheepishly obliged.”

Mel’s wife passed away a few days later. Mel said,

“Now, whenever I grab the suitcase, the dog thinks we are doing to see her again.

I bow my head in gratitude before the hospital nurse who helped Mel carry out his humanitarian mission.
