I count ma’s freckles

in the summer sun

while we rest on warm cracked concrete in the yard of our little home.

Mamas white but her freckles are brown like me.

I tell her that;

she flips the page of her book,

“Mhm.”

I stretch my toes out and feel my soul thaw.

I could lay here forever;

happy as a house plant on a windowsill.

but we got to grow.
