Hostels Vs. Hotels

The pros and cons of both

Most people have experienced staying in a hotel, but not everyone has experienced staying in a hostel. They get turned off for a number of reasons and some of them are justified.

As someone who has stayed in both, I thought it would be interesting to compare my experiences of staying in each one.

Here are the pros and cons of staying in both hostels and hotels.

Hostels

Pros:

Cheaper Probably the biggest benefit of staying in a hostel is the fact that it is so cheap. Most hostels around the world are much cheaper than staying in a hotel. This allows the saved money to go towards activities and trips.

Easier to meet people Due to the fact that hostels have more people sharing a smaller space, it becomes easier to meet people this way. This is especially great for solo travelers as it becomes less daunting to strike up a conversation in your room or common areas and generally, people who stay in hostels are wanting to meet new people.

Host activities There are some hostels that organize trips and activities for everyone to participate in if they feel up for it. Not only is this also great for meeting people and not having to do activities alone, but they are also able to get cheaper deals on tours that may have cost more to go alone.

Cons:

Lack of privacy One of the biggest setbacks about staying in a hostel is that there is a lack of privacy as you are sharing a space with many people that you don’t know. So you are sleeping and changing in a room full of strangers essentially. This can also feel a bit unsafe at times and have you worrying about your possessions, especially if there is no safe place to lock them up.

Inconsiderate people Unfortunately this is a very common disadvantage of staying in a hostel. Meeting people from different walks of life also means that people generally don’t have the same amount of consideration as you may have, so they may think its normal to shout on the phone at 2 am or turn the lights on at 6 am when everyone is sleeping even if it is inconsiderate and annoying.

Uncomfortable This isn’t the case for all hostels, but the comfort and cleanliness levels tend to drop the lower the price goes. This means creaky flat beds, and hairs in the shower drain which can be pretty gross but that is what happens when sharing amenities with many people. If you are staying at a party hostel too there is a high chance you won’t be sleeping due to the noise (though most likely if you opt for a party hostel you probably will be the ones making the noise.)

Hotels

Pros:

Comfortable Hotel rooms are a lot more comfortable than a hostel room and the more you spend the more comfortable and luxurious your room will be. Even cheaper hotel rooms tend to have a sense of comfort too, even if they aren’t at the height of luxury.

Privacy Another perk of staying in a hotel is that you have all the privacy you could want and you don’t need to share things like a bathroom with complete strangers. You also don’t need to worry about your possessions as you are most likely sharing a room with someone you know and trust.

Better hospitality With hotels comes better hospitality, which means a professional housekeeping team, and 24/7 assistance if it is needed. Hotels also tend to have a greater selection of facilities like pools and restaurants.

Cons: Pricier Staying in a hotel is a lot more costly than staying in a hostel. Because hotels do cost more, this leaves less money to spend on trips and activities or anything else for that matter.

Harder to meet people Generally people don’t go to hotels to meet other people, and if so, it is incredibly hard to meet other people in this kind of environment. People tend to stick to their party and are less likely to strike up conversations with strangers.

Missing out on the culture When a hotel offers everything from daycare, swimming pools, restaurants, and tennis courts etc, the temptation to stay in the hotel and not explore the outside world becomes too high. People are less likely to leave their comfort and luxury to immerse themselves in the culture.

I can’t honestly say I have a preference because, for me, it depends on what type of trip I am embarking on.

If I were traveling solo or backpacking, a hostel would be the best option for me. But if I were to go on a holiday with friends or family a hotel would be my best bet.

Which type of accommodation do you prefer and why?

I would love to hear your thoughts!
