Homemade Sausage and Pepperoni Pizza

Homemade pizza crust, cheesy sauce, sausage and pepperoni with extra cheese

We make homemade pizza a lot around here. I have had to get creative and find ways to make pizza, since I can not use any tomato based sauces. This one has proved to be a winner. I tried to get the picture as soon as it came out of the oven, but as you can see, it was attacked before I grabbed my phone.

You can use a store bought pizza crust, but I have included my recipe for a quick and easy pizza crust. The crust is the foundation of any pizza. There are so many ways to create the perfect pizza that you and your family enjoy.

I have been asked how I eat pizza, being a type 1 diabetic. I eat the toppings of two pieces of pizza, and not the crust. I have taken a bite of the crust the first time I used this pizza crust recipe, it is fantastic!

Homemade Pizza Crust

Ingredients:

1 packet of instant yeast

3/4 cup of warm water — 105–115 degrees F

2 teaspoons sugar

2 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, add the packet of dry yeast and sugar with warm water, stir to combine. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside for 5 minutes

2. In a large bowl, add 1/2 the flour, salt, and garlic powder, and stir to combine. Add the yeast, sugar and water mixture. Add the olive oil. Stir well, add the rest of the flour, a little at a time stirring to combine.

3. Continue to stir until an elastic ball has formed, it will stick to the side of the bowl.

4. Dust your hands with flour and knead the dough 3-5 minutes. If the dough becomes too sticky, dust it with flour and keep kneading. When you poke the dough and it slowly comes back, it is ready to let rise. Shape into a ball.

5. Coat a large bowl with olive oil, roll your ball of dough around the bowl to coat with olive oil. Cover with plastic wrap or a towel and let rise 30–60 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.

6. Punch down the dough and knead 5 times to smooth it out. It is now ready to use.

7. Drizzle your pizza pan with olive oil, flatten and stretch your dough to fit your pizza pan. It is now time to top your dough. Bake at 425 degrees F for 13–15 minutes. When dough is a light golden brown and cheese is melted, it is done (ovens vary).

Homemade Sausage and Pepperoni Pizza

Ingredients:

Homemade pizza crust

1 cup Mild cheese sauce, or pizza sauce

1/2 -1 pound of Italian sausage. I used a 1 pound roll because that's what Hubby likes, you can use less

Pepperoni-add however much you like

1/3 cup chopped onion (optional)

1/3 cup green bell peppers (optional)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

salt and pepper to taste

8 ounces of shredded mozzarella cheese, or more for extra cheese

a handful of cheddar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make homemade pizza crust
  2. Brown Italian sausage, with onion and green bell peppers.
  3. Season with salt and pepper, and garlic powder. Drain excess grease
  4. Top pizza with the cheese sauce, or pizza sauce
  5. Spread sausage, onion and pepper mixture evenly over the sauce
  6. Add mozzarella cheese evenly across the pizza (I add a handful of cheddar to please Hubby)
  7. Add pepperoni
  8. Bake in a 425 degree F. oven for 13–15 minutes. When the pizza crust is a light golden brown and cheese is melted, it is done (oven’s vary)

We have pizza night with the kids and grandkids. The toppings and sauces are endless. Everyone likes something different. My favorite is the cheese sauce, sausage, pepperoni, extra cheese. I use onions, green bell peppers, banana peppers, mushrooms, and black olives.

My secret ingredient, I sprinkle a little Parmesan cheese before adding the mozzarella cheese.

How about making some homemade pizza dough and see what you can create! I hope you enjoy!
