Summary

The web content discusses the dichotomy between adhering to holiday traditions and focusing on the underlying spirit of the celebrations, reflecting on how different individuals approach holidays based on their personal beliefs and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

The article, titled "Holidays- Traditions or Spirit," delves into the nuanced debate surrounding the celebration of holidays. It contrasts the perspectives of those who meticulously plan and embody holiday events with those who prioritize the essence and sentiment of the day over rituals and symbols. The author, a non-ritualistic parent living abroad, ponders the balance between honoring customs and capturing the true meaning of holidays, aiming to pass on these cultural and life riddles to future generations. The piece, inspired by a prompt from Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她), invites readers to consider whether holiday celebrations are inherently binary or exist on a spectrum, and encourages sharing of personal thoughts on the matter.

Holidays- Traditions or Spirit

Analyzing Fact and Feelings

Celebrating a holiday

You do or you do not.

They are a binary fact.

But what causes debates hot.

Is how and how much!

There are the full steam planners

Who practically embody the events.

Opposite are the subtle believers,

Who care only about spirit

More than actions.

Rituals or symbols?

What best a day’s emotions?

The attempts of the vast majority

Lie truly in the middle

Following and also carrying forward

These cultural and life riddles!

This poem is a response to the excellent prompt you Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) .

It’s my interpretation of what it really means to celebrate a holiday? As a parent who is not ritualistic (and lives abroad), I debate this a lot. Is it in following customs? Is it in immersing ourselves in why that occasion is celebrated? How do we carry the baton of that spirit and the comfortable familiarity of traditions to the next generations? What’s too much for some is too little for others?

What do you think? Share your thoughts.

And of course, so add your own take on the prompt of the day: dichotomous or continuous.
