Original Poem

Holding Thin

My deepest fear.

Credit: ghwtog on Needpix.com (CC0)

The evil spirits won’t be gone The evil spirits in my head They tax me, taunt me all day long No peace they’ll bring but fear instead

They know me, are me in a way They’ve been here ever since I knew My letters, colors, numbers all And still more time they will accrue

Their message meant to tear apart The smallest progress that I make Their voices sound like others though My own they try to bring heartbreak

I don’t know when I started to Allow them to gain purchase here To hang until familiar be Then climb inside to build their lair

Slowly soon they started in To taunt, to murmur insults mild I took in stride, so used to it I barely heard their quick revile

But soon acerbic wit reveals The caustic nature of their brood The spit, and spew and gnash their teeth Black clouds conceal to best delude

And over time they dig within Attaching to the matter there To white and grey they latch on tight Continuing to call, “Despair!”

But counter to what you’d expect My enemies they make up not For soon as friends they seem to be Familiar given not a thought

Then one day I decide to fight Against the messages I’ve learned From since the time before I walked That I am worth no one’s concern

Good reason do I recognize The spirits voices known so well That they’ve become familiar true Their punishment I cannot quell

One worry though remains behind The one that keeps me up at night That if they go then so will I To disappear past time and light
