Fiction|Writing Challenge

Hodgepodge Challenge — No 3

Another autumn-themed challenge — sort of!

Person in a corn maze — AI-generated image by author using NightCafe

Happy “hump day!” You’ve survived the beginning of another week and September is nearly over! The light at the end of the tunnel may be the weekend, or it may be a train! Here is another Hodgepodge Challenge to spice up your mid-week and rack up the points!

Who doesn’t love a good provocation to get the creative juices flowing?! The autumn season begins 9/23, so we have one more autumn-themed challenge! (Sort of — of course!)

Writing prompt choices

(1 point each or 2 points for using both):

  • Working your way through a corn maze, you hear someone frantically pleading for help — but not because they are lost! Will you forge on to help them? What will you find if you do? Can your conscience allow you to walk away?
  • Someone/thing is a Kleptomaniac. What items are they taking and what are they doing with them? Are there consequences?

Elements to include

(1 point each):

  1. Something (unnatural) falling from the trees. Is it harmful? Edible?
  2. Someone’s emotions are expressed in an unusual way. (Examples: Anger-they/something catches fire. Depression-they melt into a puddle/leave a trail like a slug.)
  3. A wishing well that grants distorted wishes (you choose if it’s the complete opposite, a sliver of truth to the wish…)
  4. Something sticky
  5. A musical instrument (or its sound)

Bonus: 1 point for either a 100-word drabble or a 1,000-word story!

Ground Rules

  1. Use one or both prompt choices.
  2. Include as many elements as possible.
  3. Try to keep submissions between 100 and 1,000 words.
  4. Tag me so I can read your story and add it to the next publication!
  5. Challenge your fellow (competitive) writers!
  6. Publish where you choose but consider The Fictioneer’s Treasure Trove.
Please list your prompts and elements (shortened)in a box like this. (Ctrl + Alt +6) Thank you!

I extend this challenge to Jacinta Palmer, Ben Ulansey, and Len Vidson. I hope each of you join the fun!!
