The First Emperor’s Grand Vision
China’s legendary Terracotta Army was constructed on the order of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor to unite China under the Qin dynasty over 2,200 years ago. Intended to accompany the emperor into the afterlife, this clay army of 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots, and 670 horses would serve as his eternal guardians.
It was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by a Chinese emperor. The staggering effort and artistry required was unprecedented.
The Epic Scale of the Terracotta Warriors
The terracotta figures were crafted in distinct military formations, facing east to protect the emperor’s nearby tomb from perceived threats. Each soldier was made of local clay and uniquely sculpted down to facial expressions and hairstyles.
The figures averaged 5–6 feet tall, though commanding officers were taller. Numerous coatings of lacquer and paint originally gave vivid color to the army, though only faded pigment remains today. Truly no expense or skill was spared in their creation.
The Chance Discovery of China’s Buried Treasure
Despite being one of the most significant archeological finds of all time, the Terracotta Army remained entirely forgotten and hidden for millennia until its rediscovery in 1974. A group of farmers digging well-unearthed fragments of the clay warriors a mile east of Xi’an.
This prompted major excavations that revealed three main underground pits containing thousands of figures. It was an absolutely astounding chance find that ignited global fascination with China’s buried ancient army.
Active Excavation and Study Continues
While a large portion of the total army has now been uncovered, archeologists estimate over a third remains buried and waiting to be discovered. Active excavation and research continue today as new technologies help advance our understanding.
High-resolution 3D scanners have been utilized to study and catalog over 10,000 clay figures recovered so far. More pieces of China’s rich history are still being reassembled as excavation perseveres.
The Legacy of China’s Terracotta Army
Beyond its awe-inspiring magnificence, the Terracotta Army provides an unprecedented glimpse into early Chinese history. The exquisite crafting and military preparedness demonstrated expanded our knowledge of the Qin Dynasty’s art, culture, and governance.
UNESCO declared the army a World Heritage Site in 1987. The site containing the pits is now one of China’s star tourist attractions, drawing millions to marvel at this unparalleled wonder of the ancient world.
