Summary

The author learned unconventional sales strategies from a former drug dealer named Cory, which significantly increased their sales.

Abstract

The article details the author's experience with Cory, a former drug dealer turned sales agent, who demonstrated remarkable sales prowess by making $1,120 in sales between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. on his first day. Cory's approach included working while competitors slept, leveraging group sales (fishing with a net), and immediate execution without overplanning. Inspired by Cory's success, the author adopted these strategies, such as working late nights and early mornings, and created a business model offering webpage templates to sales associates who dreaded making their own sales websites. This approach led to a tenfold increase in the author's sales income.

His Drug Dealer Strategies Increased My Sales Tenfold

Here’s how I did it

Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve heard about the time I hired a drug dealer as a sales agent.

He converts powder into profits relative to the works of Jesus turning blood into wine. He prescribes one product to relieve all symptoms and sells more drugs than the local pharmacist.

Don’t be mistaken. He’s no doctor but is rumored to perform surgery with a switchblade.

No anesthesia required.

Fortunately, I learned a few things from him in his brief time selling a legal product on a digital corner.

If you didn’t read about the time I hired a drug dealer, here’s a summary:

He was recruited around 9 p.m.

By 7 a.m. the next morning he had $1,120 in sales

Afterward, he shared a few words of wisdom with me. (let’s call him Cory) Here’s what learned:

Become the dark knight: the nocturnal advantage

The early bird gets the worm

However, before the early bird awakes, the owl has satisfied his appetite; often eating two to three meals on average.

Yes, I had doubts about Cory, but his immediate actions after being recruited rid me of all doubts.

A warm blanket and soft pillow induced me into a deep sleep only minutes after making a late-night sale. Like an opportunist grateful for an opportunity, Cory declined deep sleep and began deep work.

Following the clock striking midnight, he began to make calls. My back office would later reveal that most of his sales were made between two and three a.m.

By the time I awoke, he made fourteen sales!

Yes, $1,120.

What the hell?

These tactics were foreign to me and weren’t covered in Donald Trump’s “The Art of the Deal.”

Who answers phone calls at two a.m.? If anything, this sounds like a dealbreaker.

Following this discovery, did I become nocturnal and make late-night sales calls? No!

However, Cory taught me that there’s an advantage to being active while your competition is inactive. While your competition is asleep, dreaming about sales, the winners put in the work that makes sales happen.

The influence of Cory’s unorthodox schedule inspired me to work later nights and earlier mornings.

Fish with a net, not a hook

It’s 2 a.m.

Unlike the owl gliding in the late-night sky, I lay immobile, while roaming within the dreams broadcasted by my subconscious.

Between 2:20 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. the unthinkable happens. As I approach the later stages of REM sleep, Cory calls his nocturnal friends and makes four sales within ten minutes.

His explanation:

“I fish with a net, not a hook”

The average fisherman catches his bass one fish at a time. However, Cory doesn’t waste time casting hooks into the ocean. Instead, he deploys a net; allowing him to catch multiple fish without bait.

Cory confessed that his 2 a.m. phone call was made to one individual who accompanied three people. They all signed up.

Plan briefly, Execute immediately

Suicide?

My left wrist reveals a scar that some mistaken for a suicide attempt.

In my teens, I worked at the local grocery store. Only hours after receiving my first box cutter, I slit my wrist while attempting to cut a box open (Frosted Flakes). Shortly after, the blood puddles on the floor made aisle six look like a horror scene from a “Carrie” movie.

In a panicked voice, a co-worker ordered me to see the pharmacist.

As I approached Mrs. Taylor, the friendly neighborhood pharmacist, her eyes revealed the images of an eighteen-year-old kid who appeared to take a swim in a bucket of paint.

Without hesitation, she grabbed me by the arm with an iron grip and led me to the water faucet. I can still feel the pain of the water pouring on my wound.

Taylor was officially in the zone. She ordered another worker to retrieve something to help conceal the wound to stop the bleeding. In an attempt to extend my awake time, she ordered the manager to hold me upright while engaging me in continuous conversation.

Shortly after, the ambulance arrived to escort me to the ER. However, with my life on the line, Taylor converted the pharmacy into an ER of her own.

In the heat of the moment, Taylor took immediate action and planned while on the move.

Hesitancy is often followed by procrastination. In the marketplace, procrastination could mean financial losses.

However, in the medical field, procrastination can bury a patient six feet deep.

Cory, who refuses to let an opportunity go to waste succeeded by taking immediate action. Not everyone obtains the ability to plan on the move.

But there’s one thing we can all do:

Plan briefly and execute immediately

Adopting Cory’s teachings

While unloading endless pallets on a forklift, I spent the entire shift at my day job reflecting on Cory's words.

I fish with a net, not a hook

“Where can I cast my own net?” I asked myself this question multiple times in the days that followed.

One day, after signing up another associate, he shared his disinterest in creating his own sales website. I liked the guy, so I created an additional page on my website that had its own affiliate link.

He would drive all prospects to this page and then they would sign up. Because all recruits were signing up through his affiliate link he would get the sale.

After doing so, I came to a great realization; Over fifty percent of all sales associates dreaded the idea of making their own sales website.

This was my opportunity. Over the next few days, I designed six different webpage templates, available to any new sales rep for the price of $10.

Each person that I recruited was instructed to recommend all of his recruits to contact me about getting a sales page. Before you know it, I ran a successful operation, charging each individual $10 a month.

I finally cast my net and it paid off.

After days of stressing over this drug dealer’s parable, I came to a great realization a few nights later. All signups were having the same issue: no one wanted to create their own website.

This was my chance. For $10 a month I offered to host a page for each person on my website.

Every new associate on my downline was instructed to recommend each of their referrals to contact me to have a personal site set up.

I was one of a few guys in the marketplace doing this. Eventually, this fishing net increased my sales income tenfold.
